Blackwolf Run – Meadow Valleys Course

The Meadow Valleys Course of the Blackwolf Run Golf Club in Wisconsin is perhaps the best image of how Mother Nature would have created a golf course herself. This is the most unfazed natural Wisconsin terrain that a golf course could have, and it so good at being good it comes naturally. And there should not be anything surprising about its being excellent; it is a Pete Dye creation. Can a golf vacation destination be any less than best if it is a Dye?

Although mostly overshadowed by its more famous sibling course, the Meadow Valleys Course has its own set of merits. This golf vacation haven winds through natural valleys and deep ravines, as well as tall-grassed meadows all playing out the role of a hazard. And all that are natural – thereby giving the most exciting, most interesting changes in elevation that no other man-made facility could ever copy. On this particular course, Dye was being kind with the opening hole being a little kind and considerate, only to be countered rather surprisingly at the back nine of mostly wooded area. And when a golfer thinks the 18th hole is his reprieve for a most heartwrenching first 17 holes, the 18th will make a perfect culmination to the round. And it is something that no one could ever forget.

This superb quality of play that the Meadow Valleys Course offers is, just as naturally, recognized. The 7,142-yard, par 72 course ranked 60th in Golf Digest’s List of America’s 100 Greatest. And its unforgettable 18th hole was ranked among the world’s Top 500 holes. Well, if that is the case, golf trips here would feel like Mother Nature prepared it herself.

Blackwolf Run – River Course

Pete Dye knows what he wants. And what he wants, he puts on the ground as a golf vacation destination that golfers love. His creations could speak for themselves. In Wisconsin, four of their prized golf jewels are Pete Dye creations ranked amongst the top in America, and in the world. One of them is the River Course of the Blackwolf Run Golf Club.

The River Course plays for just 6,991 yards from the longest tees, par 72, shorter than the more famous Dye Courses in the area. However, none of its superb features indicate it being short on fun and challenge, and scenery. As its name implies, a scenic glacial river basin runs through the entire course that works both on the aesthetics and provide natural hazards too. Pete Dye has a way of elevating the challenge on all his creations. On this one, the level of difficulty is on a staccato, ending with a bang on the signature 18th: a par 4 closer that would not be called The Dyehard for nothing. With a combination like that, this course is more than likely to leave an impression on anyone’s golf vacation.

And the biggest names in the sport seem to agree. Golf Digest, for one, has rated that very elusive five-star rating for Places to Play list also ranked the River Course the 15th in Golf Digest’s List of America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses (2011/2012). The LPGA agrees too, as it has been the host of the 1998 Women’s Open, and is slated to host the same tournament again in 2012. Pete Dye truly knows what he wants, but more than that, he knows what golfers want – a most perfect site for unforgettable golf trips. And he delivers.

Irish Course – Whistling Straits Golf Club

It’s nothing like its sibling course, The Straits. There are none of the excessive elite status of the more famous course, but the Irish Course of the Whistling Straits Golf Club has its own merits that even its more ‘fabulous’ sibling could not topple. And that is its being well loved for playability and its undeniable versatility. When the Straits become too overrated to create a leisurely golf vacation, the discreet one is the best choice for a Wisconsin vacationer. And the surprises just keep pouring.

The Irish Course, like the Straits, is a Pete Dye marvel. Whilst the world is dying to try on the Straits for its PGA Championships reputation, this humble golf vacation destination just is not as simple as it presents itself. More critics actually find this a more interesting course – an inland layout of varying difficulty from one hole to another. The sand dunes and waste bunkers, among the must-watch-out-for features of a Dye course – are maintained rather minimally, to create a time-and-weather shaped hazard. And from the looks of it, and the reviews of it as well, everything they have done and have been doing with the course is effective.

When the Straits make use of the lake for its natural hazards, the Irish Course uses the ponds, deep ravines and little streams to give its punch more power. And power it is – it has created a name for itself as one of the favorite sites for golf trips. And with its length of 7,201 yards from the longest tees, par 72, the course is not merely as overwhelming as the Straits. Rising up to its own merits, this course will most easily pass up a rival for its own sibling course – in beauty, challenge, and fame.

Straits Course – Whistling Straits Golf Club

To be on the list of the world’s top 100 golf courses is one thing. But to be amongst the top 10 from all the courses ALL OVER THE GLOBE, not to mention, be at the 3rd spot – it must be one heck of a golf vacation destination. Well, all that it is and all that it has gone through to achieve this excellent state explains and notably justifies why the Straits Course of the Whistling Straits Golf Club is ranked third in the world’s best.

The Pete Dye creation in Wisconsin has played host to the 2004 and 2010 PGA Championships and has since then been elevated into the golf courses’ elite. At more than 7,500 yards from the longest tees, the Straits Course is not merely quantity. It is quality – with a walking-only links style layout that transports golfers to another time and another place somewhere in the UK and Ireland. Pete Dye worked tirelessly along the coasts of Lake Michigan – moving earth to form grass topped dunes, rolling greens, and deep pot bunkers. And by moving earth, he did move earth to transform the former flat and basically empty abandoned Camp Haven into one of the world’s most favorite golf vacation havens.

With its wonderful and perfect combination of natural beauty and layout excellence – herein noting that the Lake Michigan does not only work as a breathtaking background but as an active hazard as well for its ever incessant winds – the Straits Course deserves all its merits. From being handpicked by true-blue golf critics to be amongst the world’s best, to being a favorite site for golf trips of countless golfers, to be asked to host the prestigious Ryder Cup (2020), it is very much deserving,

El Camaleon Golf Course

It does not exactly change its colors, that would be freaky. But this golf vacation destination was named after the chameleon for itsmore obvious and less scary feature: dynamic and diverse. The El Camaleon Golf Course would feel like playing many different courses on the same course at the same time.

The El Camaleon Golf Course is a cornucopia of different natural features. Golfers would be treated to the play along or through mangroves, tropical jungles and the golden shorelines of the Caribbean Sea surrounding the area. Its designer, Greg Norman worked on this course according to his design philosophy of creating the least intervention on nature in coming up with a tournament quality course. And this was achieved all too neatly. It wasn’t too hard, though. He didn’t do much on making it beautiful, it is beautiful in itself. What, with scenic, natural subterranean rivers that have been preserved well and acting as natural hazards, and the beautiful Carribean Sea making a lasting impression, there really is nothing more that any designer could do to make it more beautiful. What Norman had to do was bring a high-caliber golf course. It would be such an understatement to say that this goal was achieved. As a matter of fact, this chameleon changes faces from being a golf vacation haven into a top tournament facility.

And by top, it means the PGA Tour-quality kind of top. The El Camaleon Golf Course is the first golf course outside of the US and Canada to have hosted a PGA Tour, and it will keep on doing so in the coming years annually. Guests on golf trips here would effortlessly transition from being mere golfers to ‘happy golfers’, and there’s no going back from there!

Golf Club at Playacar

The Mayan jungles have had its share of glorious past, standing witness to the rich history that was one of the most celebrated ancient civilization. Many parts of it is no more, but some were, thankfully salvaged. Others, well, they transformed into different but equally glorious versions in today’s modern world. Some of it have become part of the Golf Club at Playacar, one of Mexican Caribbean’s most beautiful, most famous, and most loved golf vacation destinations.

It sits on one of the most picturesque sites in the area. The Golf Club at Playacar features a stark but beautiful contrast in the lushness of the tropical foliage and the glimmers of white sand embracing the deep sapphire blue ocean. And all that under the golden cast of the sun, blanketed by the azure skies. It would be quite hard to find anything more breathtaking a scenery than that. But the course’s many merits do not stop there. Its world-class designer, Robert Von Hagge, made sure there was a course layout to match this. Measuring close to 7,200 yards from the longest tees, par 72, Von Hagge used every element found in the area to be part of the diverse collection of hazards for this course. And this was then known in the entire Playa del Carmen as the most challenging course in the area – creating a perfect irony for the greatest of golf vacations, challenging and most enjoyable.

And the magnificence does not end there. The Clubhouse at the Golf Club at Playacar is built to resemble ancient Mayan infrastructure, with its banquet area covered in traditional palapa. A golf trip here is not only a delight to the golfer’s senses, but a visit into the glory that was ancient Mayan civilization.

Grand Coral Golf Riviera Maya

Some of the greatest things man has seen are hardly ever the work of one man alone. They are made with the effort, passion, and genius of a group of people. They work tirelessly to achieve excellence in every aspect. In golf course design, “every aspect” encompasses scenery, difficulty and playability. In today’s standards, it now involves the ecological soundness of the course – being able to achieve excellence in golf without jeopardizing the existing ecology in its area. One perfect example is the Grand Coral Golf Riviera Maya in Mexico. This golf vacation destination is out to prove that more heads are indeed better than one.

Although it is famed as a Nick Price creation, the champion player was just the name behind an entire team. Whilst he took care of the golf qualities, the Grupo Grand Coral Developer took care of the environmental issues. The Grand Coral Golf Riviera Maya, as a result, is a golf vacation haven that not only is beautiful but is beautiful enough that adjusts to and highlights the many many splendid natural beauty of the area. Being sandwiched between the Caribbean Sea and the beautiful town of Playa del Carmen makes beauty a bountiful supply hereabouts. And the design team played with it, making sure that nature was kept as untouched as possible.

The Grand Coral Golf Riviera Maya is all seven thousand plus plus yards of golf that is a hit not only among golfers but among the flora and fauna that thrive abundantly in this well-preserved environment. Golf trips here prove that more heads are not only better than one; it also proves that the more the merrier, humans and wildlife included. The course is located just thirty minutes from the Cancun International Airport.

Catalonia Caribe Golf Club

This is one place where patience is the key to the entrance. Patience, not so much for it being annoyingly bad. No, on the contrary. But golfers need to be a little more gracious and open to waiting until it reveals its true beauty. The Catalonia Caribe Golf Club is very much like a fresh bud – one must be able to endure opening it up petal by petal before it reveals a most beautiful, fragrant blossom. From the rather plain entrance, things could only get better. And golf vacations here will follow suit.

The Alberto Sola design is one of those golf vacation destinations in the Dominican Republic that do not sit along the coral shorelines of the island nation. That might make the Catalonia Caribe Golf Club seem a little less appealing that all the other bigger, more famous courses in the area. But to those who dared and discovered what it has under its folds were not the least bit disappointed. From a fairly flat layout, the 18-hole course proceeds into mounded and hilly greens, giving an interesting variety of flavors to the course.

And the course, being a true Caribbean delight, is dotted with palm trees of all sizes. They dominate the tree-scene on the course, with some being right smack in the middle of the fairways. So much for being mere adornments for aesthetics, these trees make a statement as something golfers would have to think about. Patience reaps a bounty of rewards, and that is very much true for golf trips at the Catalonia Caribe Golf Club. When patience is required at the entrance, rewards are at the exit.

Punta Blanca Golf Course

There are a number of ways to measure the greatness of a golf vacation destination. A course could be great by virtue of difficulty, scenery, or by its being relaxing. It could be one, or a combination of. A golf course’s being difficult is not always seen as a good quality course, except on the perspective of the more competitive ones. In the same way, a rather easy course is not exactly lame, as it provides a great room for relaxing – most perfect for those long vacations. Such is the Dominican Republic’s Punta Blanca Golf Course.

The Punta Blanca Golf Course is a Nick Price designed 18-hole spectacle whose best quality ranges from being beautiful to fun to extremely relaxing. A pleasurable venue that befits the description of ‘vacations’ in golf vacations. And the ‘golf’ is not too shabby either. Measuring 7,174 yards from the longest tees, par 72, the course winds through and around a mixture of natural and man made features. It rolls on gently rolling terrain and wide fairways; if this sounds too cozy, the well placed sand bunkers, natural water hazards and trees onsite would keep every golfer awake.

There are no killer approaches nor overtly difficult shots to make; so long as one stays focused on the game, the Punta Blanca Golf Course assures every golfer a very good time. Great time, even, especially that, the unmistakable beauty in this Caribbean island nation is too visible from here. The true measure of greatness of this course is by the number of happy golf trips it has made. At the moment, it is listed at countless (and it is growing).

Cocotal Golf and Country Club

There is more to Jose “Pepe” Gancedo than just being a golf champion. With the work he has done as a course designer, with Cocotal Golf and Country Club in particular, Gancedo is a well rounded genius. He is called the Picasso of golf course design, but he is not merely an artist. He is a wizard – working his magic to come up with one of the most famous golf vacation destinations in the Dominican Republic.

The Cocotal Golf and Country Club is a 27-hole spectacle in Punta Cana. On his work here, Gancedo let nature do the talking, but had his say heard loud and clear. The course flows through natural terrain, with Gancedo leaving the interruption to a minimum. But with minimum, it was placing the trees where they will most be felt – not merely seen. A good variation of coconut trees, tropical trees, and coconut palms that work hand-in-hand with the incessant sea breeze to let the golfers know where they are, and make them remember it as their most favorite golf vacation. There is as much nature features on this course as there are man-made ones – including the well-shaped, well-placed bunkers, but the wizard in Gancedo made the distinction close to nothing at all.

Not ever course designer could come up with something equally stunning and equally challenging. Gancedo managed to, and in a very excellent, absolute stand-out fashion. The magic of the Spanish golf course designer is not merely in neatly weaving his talents with the blessings of Mother Nature. It is in the innate sense and wisdom on what makes golf trips happy. The Cocotal Golf and Country Club has four sets of tees, measuring 7,285 from the longest. It opened in 2000.
