Punta Espada Golf Course at Cap Cana

It is to imagine any part of the Caribbean to be anything other than beautiful. From the skies to the sea to the mountains, beauty comes in all forms here. It does not come as surprising why many golf course developers and designers come over to make a golfer’s haven of this blessed paradise. Many have succeeded; in fact, some of the world’s most beautiful courses are found here. But it takes the genius of someone like Jack Nicklaus to bring out the best golfing experience in a golf vacation destination using and highlighting what nature has to offer hereabouts. One look at the Punta Espada Golf Course at Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic is a most perfect example.

The course, measuring a well over 7000 yards from the longest tees, par 72, is the first of the three Nicklaus designs at the beautiful Cap Cana Resort. Punta Espada Golf Course features eight of its holes playing along and over the sea. The views here of the Caribbean Sea are enough to put the most hard-hearted person to tears. Take this image: azure skies, sapphire seas, seen from the most emerald of fairways and greens . Nothing gets better than this, the superstitious might actually be led to believe that Nicklaus was appointed by the golf gods themselves to bring this gift of splendid golf vacation for their subjects.

That said, it isn’t at all surprising why the Punta Espada Golf Course was hailed by GolfWeek Magazine as the No. 1 Golf Course in the Caribbean and Mexico. Out of the many courses in this area, GW singled it out as the most beautiful, perfect for any golf trip. What could go bad if this is the best of the best?

Cana Bay Palace Golf Club

Jack Nicklaus was never too selfish to take everything all to himself. He made sure nature has its handiwork unconcealed on his work at the Cana Bay Palace Golf Club. In fact, the natural splendor of this part of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is the highlight of the work he did on this premiere golf vacation destination – right at the forefront for everyone to see and fall in love with.

The Cana Bay Palace Golf Club is located along the beautiful, golden sanded shores of the Macao Beach, and is accessible from the airport in Punta Cana. The course winds around bare sand and rock, an unmatched view of the beach, stunning set of expansive lakes, and rolling fairways. And Nicklaus being Nicklaus, his design never did stop on the visually appetizing. After all, what’s a golf vacation worth if it couldn’t give a great round of golf? This is where the challenge comes in. Nicklaus has filled this course with a combination of natural and sandy waste areas and bunkers that make the approaches a little tougher. And combined with the aforementioned visual appetizers, they give a round or two here some much appreciated attitude.

And since nature is at the front seat of this golf trip spectacle, it is only natural to see the best of the Caribbean’s native tropical vegetation. They stand in a most perfect contrast to the paspalum turf carpeting the course. From the longest tees, the Cana Bay Palace Golf Club measures a good 7,253 yards, par 72. it has four sets of tees and it opened in 2009.

Casa de Campo – Links Course

When the Casa de Campo resort in the Dominican Republic is raised, images of the Teeth of the Dog and the Dye Fore come to mind in an flash. But those who truly know the Casa de Campo know that there are not two but three masterpieces in the famous Caribbean golf vacation destination. The Links Course may not have all the stunning water views of the Teeth and the Dye Fore, but knowing that it is a Dye creation too is enough a promise that it isn’t going to be any different in beauty and play with the other too.

The Links Course completes the triad of 18-hole championship courses at the Casa de Campo. Unlike the Teeth and the Dye Fore, this inland course is created to be a parkland style layout, weaving through the residences, dotted and lined with a variety of tropical vegetation. And, again, unlike its famous, really difficult brothers, this course is the right place to get a most needed breather. Golf vacations are exactly how they should be, where playable and enjoyable are contending to be its middle name. But that does not mean it is too easy to not bite at all.

With an array of mounds and bunkers fashioned in a signature Pete Dye way, golfers should expect some teeth on here. And the levels of elevation vary after every two holes – or it feels that way at least – thereby giving golfers something to think about. But in general this is the happy carousel ride to the roller coasters that are the Teeth and the Dye Fore. After a golf trip to the Casa de Campo and a game at the Links Course, there is something more to look forward to on the return.

Casa de Campo – Dye Fore

“To die for” pretty much sums up how golfers feel about the Casa de Campo resort in the Dominican Republic. Everything about the golf vacation destination ranges between beautiful and magnificent, and not one detail was left unattended. While it may be known for the classic Pete Dye creation, Teeth of the Dog, its two other courses are as great. The Dye Fore, for one, has all the features of the Teeth, presented rather differently. But just as “to-die-for”.

The Dye Fore course plays for an eye-popping 7, 770 yards from the championship tees, par 72. At that length, only the seasoned pros dare take a shot from those tees. Thankfully, there are other shorter, friendlier tees on the course. But friendlier never meant easier. Here, golfers would have to brave the beautiful, albeit nerve-wracking holes. There are some placed along the cliff, overlooking the beach. Others are on mounds, giving an unaltered, undisturbed river views. And they are not unguarded. Signature Dye bunkering haunt and daunt golfers’ every shot. That alone gives this golf vacation haven that much attitude; and that is something only the breathtaking scenery can complete.

Its being in the Dominican Republic, right in the middle of the sapphire-blue waters of the Caribbean, gives the Casa de Campo a lot of breathtaking views from every angle. And, like in the Teeth course, the Dye Fore made optimum use of this advantage. Every heartbreak from playing this course is only appeased by the views of varying hues – blue, white, green – all glowing under the golden cast of the sun. With a promise as irresistible as this, one simply could not bear the thought of dying before taking a golf trip here.

Casa de Campo – Teeth of the Dog Course

The Caribbean is perhaps the closest thing the Earth has to Paradise. The question of whether it is beautiful or not will prove to be totally useless, if not stupid. But to clearly define and single out which part of the Caribbean is most beautiful is an impossible task. Even more so, finding such a place would be like looking for water in hell. But if there is such a place, the Casa de Campo resort in the Dominican Republic is a good place to start. And its Teeth of the Dog course could well be a contender – it already is a winner in the golf vacations category.

A Pete Dye creation, the Teeth of the Dog course is dubbed the Number 1 course in the Caribbean and ranks in the upper 50 in the world’s top 100. And it has been that way since its opening back in 1971. This golf vacation destination has some of the most picturesque views – with some holes playing directly over the sapphire blue waters surrounding. But it is not just another pretty face; as its name implies, this course is biting. And biting on most every hole that is – from every possible angle: the cliff, around the greens, by the water.

True there are longer courses than the Teeth of the Dog at 6,888 yards, par 71. But because there is so much to take in on this course – getting a good shot, basking in the scenery – it feels a whole lot longer. It’s as if it gives something back for every penny spent on a golf trip here. If this were the only thing on a Caribbean trip itinerary, it would be the most beautiful place on earth hands down!

Bobcat Trail Golf Club

Sarasota County’s pride and joy in golf, the Bobcat Trail Golf Club has made Excellence its middle name – never leaving room for anything less than that. Its designer, PGA Tour Champion Bob Tway would not allow. This golf vacation destination is all about the best in Florida’s natural environment, quality customer service, and the skill of a designer only a champion and seasoned pro golfer could deliver.

The Bobcat Trail Golf Club – or more fondly called “The Cat” – measures a little over 6,700 yards from the longest tees, par 71. At some points, golfers may feel like it is tad longer than that. And it is the mental game that extends it. Conquering the course meant thoroughly thinking about club selection, shot technique, and pretty much everything. And just because this is a risk-reward course does not mean every risk option must be taken; the right risks bring in the right rewards. And only the discriminating golfer would take that extra time to figure that out at every hole. But if on that note this course sounds like a most unwanted accomplice to a relaxing golf vacation, then the scenery and services plus amenities will do the talking.

Tway made use of the natural embellishments of the area, filling the course with its helping of native oaks, pines, and tropical vegetation. Florida being Florida, always glowing under its almost perpetual sunshine, it sure is a treat for sore eyes. And the perfect treat for sore, game-embattled golfer’s senses is a trip to the course’s 19th hole. At the Bobcat Trail Golf Club, a golf trip is only known by one other name: HAPPINESS.

Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club

Tests by time, war and even the worst of nature’s outrages have only toughened up the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club. Though it is a far cry from what it originally looked like, there is so much of its glamor and layout excellence that it enjoyed back when it first opened in the 1920s. That is thanks to the work done by designer Ron Garl for the past twenty years, since redoing the whole course in 1980. He is as much involved in the maintenance as he was in the design and construction And the result could never be less than gratifying. The many golf trip stories are enough a proof.

The Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club stands right next to the Gulf of Mexico with some of the oldest trees anyone would ever find in the golf courses of Florida. Generous, tree lines fairways, undulating greens, lakes and a good helping of bunkers bring out the best in this classic course of traditional layout design. This golf vacation destination measures close to 6,500 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72.

As it is, the course has tested and proven several of the world’s best pros in the many qualifiers and major tournaments hosted here. And it has also been the site of many memorable golf vacations, being one of the southwest end’s most loved classic course. The Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club has been part of Naples for the longest time, and though it has seen its worst of times, it has always given local and visiting golfers the best time.

River Hall Country Club

Davis Love III brings his talents for the first time in the Sunshine State with the River Hall Country Club. In the process of creating this masterpiece, he combined his own design philosophy and what nature has blessed this part of the world with. The result? A golf vacation destination that brings quite a modern flair to the traditional golf layout; a course that brings a little bit of most everything any golfer would want in beauty and difficulty.

The River Hall Country Club, which opened in 2007, measures a whooping 7,300 yards from the longest tees and plays for a par of 72. It has five sets of tees, thus making it more playable for more golfers, skill level regardless. The widely open layout is dotted with a variety of small trees and long grasses, with the latter giving it a links feel. The putting areas are open, but heavily guarded by bunkers on one side, and mounds on the other. The fairway landing areas are flat but are surrounded by mounds as well. Errant shots are likely to be punished heavily. But then again, what is a golf vacation if it would only make one feel terrible? The rewards are great for good shots too.

And speak of rewards, the pro shop and the treats at the clubhouse and the in-house Caloosa Grille are a most wonderful reward. Whether one has played poorly or excellently, there is always one for rewards or consolations here at the River Hall Country Club. It is worth taking a golf trip to, and it should not – nor would it ever end with the first time.

The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club

The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club in Sanibel Island, Florida is just one among the many. It just makes a small part in the Sunshine State’s long – really long – list of superb golf vacation destinations. But for some reason, this course stands out not only for its features but because it made a name among the top favorites of locals and visitors alike.

It could be the lush tropical views and features. The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club is painted with an Audubon International sanctioned wildlife preserve for background so its being beautiful comes just as naturally. And the unabashed presence of such creatures as alligators, ospreys, herons, and bald eagles makes an outing here even more interesting. It could also be the excellent 5,578 yard-, par 70-layout. Well, not really surprising; a design from PGA Tour champ Mark McCumber would hardly be anything other than superb. He has made sure his layout meshes perfectly with the natural attributes of the area, thereby making this course easily seem like a part of the preserve itself. A natural, so to speak. Or, it could be the impeccable maintenance on the course that draws people to it. Whatever good that the nature-designer collaboration has done to it is meticulously kept at its best form so any time will be a good time for a golf vacation.

It could be the scenery, the layout, or the conditioning – or it could be everything that makes the Dunes Golf and Tennis Club an excellent course. It could be any or all of it that has merited this course the Best of Sanibel Island for ten straight years. Whatever it is, it is what makes it a favorite star in countless golfers’ most memorable golf trips.

Stoneybrook Golf Club

This is that one golf course where the low handicap golfers can take their newbie buddies and expect both to have as much fun. The better golfers won’t feel too underrated; the new ones won’t be intimidated either. Stoneybrook Golf Club in Estero, Fl., can do that with its seven sets of tees. Forget the eye popping or the brow raising. This course truly has seven sets of tees on each hole. Designers Jed Azinger and Gordy Lewis have made for this course to be friendly to all golfers. And friendly it is that in fact, this is one of the only 200 courses all across the United States that are certified “beginner-friendly” by the National Golf Course Owners Association. Now, doesn’t that add one or two more friends to take to the most awaited golf trip?

And there is nothing to worry about overcrowding. With a maximum length of 7,353 yards, the Stoneybrook Golf Club is among the longest ones in southwest Florida. And this isn’t just more than seven thousand yards of nothing. The golf vacation destination winds around the most beautiful natural preserves, dotted with indigenous vegetation that include pines, oaks and stately cypresses. On top of that are a good helping of imposing bunkers, rolling mounds, and large undulating greens defined by several crystal-clear lakes. These are all put together in a manner that could only result in what most people call a superb championship golf course.

With the length of Stoneybrook Golf Club, a golf vacation with just one or two friends would prove to be lonely. This is where “the more, the merrier” is at its truest.
