The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club

The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club in Sanibel Island, Florida is just one among the many. It just makes a small part in the Sunshine State’s long – really long – list of superb golf vacation destinations. But for some reason, this course stands out not only for its features but because it made a name among the top favorites of locals and visitors alike.

It could be the lush tropical views and features. The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club is painted with an Audubon International sanctioned wildlife preserve for background so its being beautiful comes just as naturally. And the unabashed presence of such creatures as alligators, ospreys, herons, and bald eagles makes an outing here even more interesting. It could also be the excellent 5,578 yard-, par 70-layout. Well, not really surprising; a design from PGA Tour champ Mark McCumber would hardly be anything other than superb. He has made sure his layout meshes perfectly with the natural attributes of the area, thereby making this course easily seem like a part of the preserve itself. A natural, so to speak. Or, it could be the impeccable maintenance on the course that draws people to it. Whatever good that the nature-designer collaboration has done to it is meticulously kept at its best form so any time will be a good time for a golf vacation.

It could be the scenery, the layout, or the conditioning – or it could be everything that makes the Dunes Golf and Tennis Club an excellent course. It could be any or all of it that has merited this course the Best of Sanibel Island for ten straight years. Whatever it is, it is what makes it a favorite star in countless golfers’ most memorable golf trips.

Raptor Bay Golf Club

This does not exactly fit the description for Madonna’s La Isla Bonita but it definitely passes on for being bonita. Well, not surprisingly so; Naples, Florida is naturally beautiful. But the work done by Raymond Floyd at the Raptor Bay Golf Club has exceeded the usual Florida experience. This golf vacation destination is very playable and very welcoming. And well-loved for it by most everyone – feathered, furred, and scaly included!

The Raptor Bay Golf Club is a haven serving a second home for many golfers who have been coming back here for their golf trips. This is one of the most playable courses anywhere, having the capacity to excite and delight golfers both the low- and the high-handicap ones . It has 5 sets of tees, measuring 6,702 yards from the longest tees, par 71; that and its very generous fairways. Unlike most other Florida golf courses, this one has no sand bunkers at all. But there are plenty of sandy waste areas and a whooping 22 acres of lakes playing on virtually almost every hole on this 18-hole facility. That pretty much tells that this golf course has enough toughness for a wild side.

And speak of wild, the Raptor Bay Golf Club literally has a wild side in its wildlife inhabitants. Its 200 acres of nature preserve is home to several indigenous animals including the bald eagle. This is a favorite home to many animals just as much as it is a golfer’s favorite for their golf vacations and outings. As a matter of fact, this is the first in the world that has received the Gold Certification from the Audubon International. This is one course that definitely does not fit in the generic definition of beauty in Florida golfing. It exceeds, it is beautiful beyond words.

Lely Mustang Golf Club

There is always that one member of the family who is kinder than everyone else – the ones who are more popular with the larger crowd simply because they are so easy to be with. In a family of courses in a resort, that kinder, easier course will always be present too. Just like the Lely Mustang Golf Club in Naples, Florida. While its sibling course, the Flamingo, draws raves for being beautiful and very challenging, this golf vacation destination is carving a name of its own for being Mr Congeniality. This course has its own brand of challenge that leaves a lot of fun room for the lower-handicapped players. And no one could dare say anything against its looks, lest risk being called dishonest.

The twelve stunning lakes of the Lely Mustang Golf Club are enough a proof of its unparalleled beauty. But stopping at that feature is not giving justice to the totality of the work that designer Lee Trevino did here. The lakes along with a number of sand bunkers give as much grit to the course as it could get. Thankfully, though, the undulating fairways and the relatively flat greens make for easier recovery after an errant shot. Pretty much like the Flamingo, the Mustang is lined with many Florida pines and other native vegetation and could easily be said to be as beautiful. But what separates the two is the Mustang’s being forgiving, therefore less daunting and more inviting. Makes for enjoyable golf trips for more people.

From the longest tees, the Lely Mustang Golf Club measures 7,217 yards, par 72. Golf vacations hereabouts are completed by the resort’s world class set of amenities, and are celebrated by the countless golfers it made happy since its opening in 1991.

Hammock Bay Golf Club

When one thing ends, another commences. Or so it has been the case of the Hammock Bay Golf Club. What was once the Marco Shores Golf Club – a Bruce Devlin/Robert Von Hagge original design – has been completely changed to bring a fresh and welcome change to the Naples, Fl golfing scene. PGA Tour legend Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy, created the newest “in-thing” in golf from the remnants of a classic. And the result could not be any less than the best golf vacation destination in the area.

Located near the Marco Island, the Hammock Bay Golf Club is a par-72, 18-hole spectacle that stretches close to 7000 yards from the longest tees. There are five sets of tees, where the longest tees are close to being unforgiving but the middle and shorter tees are a treat to the lower-handicapped players. The course, moved perhaps by the pressure of staying out of its predecessor’s shadow, offers a different flavor to golf vacations hereabouts. It does have the lush tropical landscaping – inspired by the views of the nearby McIlvane Bay, but the terrain is rolling with mild elevation changes, things which are uncommonly found here. To make matters even better, the course holds the Certified Gold Sanctuary certification, the highest of its kind from the Audubon International.

The Hammock Bay Golf Club still has the usual helping of traditional Florida golf features: it has water playing on 14 of its 18 holes, and there are more than 50 shaped and well-placed bunkers spread all over the course. And it is always impeccably groomed, always ready for golf trips all year round. From the looks of it, it is safe to say even its predecessor would be so proud of the way it turned out.

Siena Golf Club

This is not anywhere near Siena, Italy but any golfer could easily utter a hearty “Benissimo!” at the first sight of the Siena Golf Club in Las Vegas. And that should not be an object of surprise. Being surrounded by the beautiful Spring Mountains always has that kind of effect on people. But the layout, well the layout has its own effect. It ranges between bewildered and charmed, bewitched more likely. The effect may vary, but the method is consistent: a full blown golf vacation here to experience it in its fullness.

The Siena Golf Club is located in Summerlin and features more than 6,800 yards of golf, par 72. Right from the opening hole to the very last (and even after it), the golf vacation destination promises to keep its guests entertained. The course is one huge spectacle of rye grass fairways, beautifully contoured sand bunkers and undulating bentgrass greens. Whilst these features are a sight for sore eyes, they are as fatal. As are the stunning water hazards that play on six of the eighteen holes. But it will be a pain in the neck only to the careless and underestimating. Not to discourage though, this Schmidt-Curley creation were made with plenty of bail-out grass areas, a most perfect reprieve so to speak.

And since this course is rocking the Italian vibe, obviously, the 14,000 square foot clubhouse will take golfers on a Tuscan holiday. The food at the Bistro is not any different, too. Given these features, it is safe to say that golf trips at the Siena Golf Club are just as excellent in any other language.

Prim Valley Golf Club – Desert Course

Tom Fazio is course design brilliance personified, hands down. The Nevada Desert is a golden paradise of canyons and boulders that glow under the usually unforgiving sun, no doubt. Now to put the two together on the same sentence, any golfer’s imagination could go wild. But when it hits reality, it is not as wild. Though a bit rugged on the edges where the desert is most present, the course is a beautiful haven, a golfers’ retreat in the middle of the desert. Anyone who has played the Desert Course of the Prim Valley Golf Club in Nevada definitely knows this. And it does not take more than a single golf vacation to fall madly in love with it.

The design of the Desert Course seemed like a most appropriate ode by the designer to nature. Fazio, as excellent as he is, managed to create a course that highlights the desert the way spotlights would a superstar onstage. And he made it in a way that makes golfers feel like the desert and the golf vacation destination are one and nothing stands in his way to be with it. On top of that, there are seemingly endless stretches of sand bunkers, cactus, palm trees, native desert vegetation, and some of the most stunning water features to give the golfer something to think about when playing this course.

With a length that measures up to 7,131 yards from the longest tees, par 72, there is indeed a LOT to think about at the Desert Course. It is the seamless combination of what golf course architecture could give and what nature has already gifted us with. Needless to say, golf trips here are unequaled.

Tuscany Golf Club

Sometimes, the best way to enjoy life is to think outside the box. Whilst many people rave about all the great things in central Vegas, and while golfers scramble to get to the best there is within the city, the knowing golfers choose to go outside. Outside the city that is. Henderson, Nevada, a mere thirty minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, holds a wonderful secret in its midst: a golf vacation destination that features everything good thinkable about a desert course, The Tuscany Golf Club.

This is not Italy but it is definitely a bellisima course, with almost 7,000 yards of golf, par 72. Since its opening in 2003, it has seen a change or two in its continuous desire for improvement, and today it could not get any better. Desert landscape, impeccably maintained greens, palms and pine trees, arroyos, large bunkers, and water features at just the right areas. Ted Robinson has designed this course to blend so well with nature it gives the feeling that Tuscany Golf Club has been there since the day the world began. It is a world away from the rest of the world – ON ONE SIDE that is, with the views of the surrounding mountains. But the view of the Las Vegas skyline on the other side is a reminder that one is on a golf vacation at one of the world’s most beautiful places.

And the heavens must have heard, the fees at the Tuscany Golf Club are very affordable. For a golf course of this caliber, it sure is a good bargain! It does pay to think outside the box, to widen one’s horizons. In this case, literally. And literally, too, golf trips here will be very, very fun.

Paiute Golf Resort – Snow Mountain Course

Everything else about the Snow Mountain Course at the Paiute Golf Resort is as pure a desert golf vacation destination as it can get except for one thing: water. The water hazards on the course are an ample and screaming reminder to the golfers that this is not their ordinary desert golf course. This is something so out-of-the-box, it could only be a Pete Dye creation. The caliber of this Las Vegas golfing spectacle is arguably the best one can have in Sin City; its only contender for the spot is its sibling Wolf Course, a Dye creation too, no less.

As mentioned earlier, what sets this course apart are its water features. Water plays on 7 of its 18 holes, with the last three being close to submerged. A little bit overrated a description, but the challenge that water poses on the closing holes make it seem so. The Snow Mountain Course measures 7,146 yards from the longest tees, playing for a par of 72. The greens are quick, mostly guarded by deep bunkers, with wide fairways. The holes here are an eclectic but fun mix of long and short ones, with the last three being the most heart stopping ones anyone would ever expect to come across in the desert. The railroad-tie bunkers – a signature Dye feature – add attitude and beauty to this already incredible course. There’s no reason to expect golf vacations here are going to be anything less than that.

The Snow Mountain Course plays with four sets of tees, making it enjoyable for golfers of all handicaps. The level of challenge vary from tee to tee; only one thing is constant: there is challenge here from whichever hole, whichever angle. Golf trips here bring a totally different face to desert golfing.

Scenic Hills Country Club

Pensacola is not the most famous golf vacation destination in Florida, considering there are more than a thousand courses all over the Sunshine State, but Pensacola stands out for one thing: it is home to the only Florida Golf Course to have hosted the US Open. The Scenic Hills Country Club hosted the 1969 US Women’s Open – the only Florida golf course TO DATE to have done so. It was prestigious back then, it is not any less better today.

Apart from the US Open gig, the Scenic Hills Country Club is also a standout among Florida courses for a number of things. For one, it bears some very dramatic elevation changes that are mostly unheard of in this flat side of the golfing country. The fairways are lined with trees, and water plays on six of the 18 holes but there are no forced carries to hurdle. This makes playing here truly fun and enjoyable; golfers are saved from the heartbreak. From too much heartbreak, that is. This course naturally does not go without challenge. The well bunkered greens will take care of that. Golf vacations here will certainly be memorably fun and challenging; holes 1, 2, 4, 9, 10 and 18 will be forever remembered.

The course measures 6,689 yards from the longest tees, par 71. It opened in 1959 and was redesigned by the legendary champion Jerry Pate in 1992. This is one of those courses that is a wonderful mix of natural beauty and human genius; one not overlapping the other. Sure, Pensacola could all too easily be overshadowed by the likes of Destin and Fort Walton Beach. But the Scenic Hills Country Club will surely make detours to Pensacola irresistible for Florida golf trips.

Windswept Dunes Golf Club

Windswept Dunes Golf Club is a living irony of sorts. With what little is done, much was achieved. And with this “much” achieved, excessive in most everything, it is just right. The features of this golf course are surprisingly interesting, a most perfect and welcome breather from the usual Florida golf vacations.

Doug O’Rourke designed this golf course with a goal in mind: to make the littlest amount of interruption on the natural vegetation and topography of the area. And the result is wild: miles and miles of natural sand dunes with some measuring twenty feet tall, huge rolling fairways, and bunkers that are a work of art in themselves. All that is spread on 750 acres of paradise, with tees measuring a whooping 7,607 yards from the longest ones – if that is not one big course, then anything else smaller than this is a mere miniature version. Featuring six sets of tees, the Windswept Dunes Golf Club is made for those golf vacations of the most epic proportions.

The best thing about it, as if everything else about it is less than grand, is that it is well secluded from the usual Florida tourist hubs that are mostly overcrowded, to say the least. This gives golf trips here a private, exclusive feel, without being worlds away from civilization. As a matter of fact, the Windswept Dunes Golf Club is a mere thirty-minute drive from the beaches of Panama City and Destin. Far enough for comfort, close enough for convenience. True, it is excessive on more things than expected, a little wild for one that’s tamed by human hands, but surprisingly, its excesses work on it just right.
