Ocean Resorts Golf Club

Golfers may easily spurt out Florida or California or even the Caribbean for their most favorite golf vacation destinations. Others may go to list the Canadian courses too. Because of the publicity that these high profile golfing states get, it is easy to overlook the courses of lower public profiles. Nothing big on this one, just a lot of great golfing opportunities missed. One great example is the OC. What most people miss about OC is its offering of great golf, just like at the Ocean Resorts Golf Club.

This golf course located 6 miles outside of Ocean City is actually quite a spectacle – both visually stunning and skill-stimulating. It has none of the signature features of legendary golfers and course designers, but it is easy to say there are quite a lot of notably good things on this one. The Ocean Resorts Club is Larry Jones design that measures 6,596 yards from the longest tees, par 72. It has 5 sets of tees that makes it an open-invitation for golfers of all skill levels. Another very inviting feature of this course are the wonderful collection of bunkers, mounds, and of course, holes set on a links-style layout. Golf vacations here are made even more interesting, not to mention scenic, thanks to the abundance of natural flora and fauna.

To perfectly cap any golf trip here are the world-class services that the staff offers. Sans the hustle and bustle of urban golfing experience, not to mention the green fees, the Ocean Resorts Golf Club is a true delight for any golfer. Courses and destinations like these are a most perfect breather for those who are looking for quality courses and are tired of overrated high end courses.

The Homestead Resort – Lower Cascades

Low profile is not exactly low quality. The Lower Cascades Course of the Homestead Resort could prove that. This Robert Trent Jones Jr creation in the famed golf vacation destination in Virginia may have kept itself under the shadows of its more famous William Flynn sibling course, The Cascades, and may lack the experience of its classic counterpart Old Course, but that is not saying it isn’t quite a statement in itself. Au contraire. This golf course is actually known among the higher-skilled golfers for being challenging.

Although the Lower Cascades Course shares the same rolling, mountain terrain and dramatic elevation changes of the Cascades, this course is actually a little more open. This makes this course notoriously deceptive – appearing to be a less difficult for being challenging on many parts of the game. Golfers tend to forget the fact that this is an Robert Trent Jones creation – apart from the signature wide fairways and large greens, it also bears his penchant for risk reward play. The higher the risk, the bigger the rewards. That makes for golf trips that are anything but simple and ordinary.

Just as it is – open, wide, challenging and no doubt beautiful, the Lower Cascades Course is reaping its own merits. And many followers too. It is a beautiful cornucopia of nature’s features – including a beautiful stream that helps shape the course – and human genius that brings only the best quality golf vacations anyone could ever ask for. It may have easily been passed up for its siblings, but it is too much a loss to do so.

The Homestead Resort – Cascades Course

The Homestead Resort has three superb courses in it. But of the three, one of them stands out as its prized jewel – Virginia’s beloved classic Cascades Course. This spectacle of a golf vacation destination has a history of 80 glorious and colorful years – one that began as an original William Flynn design, later remodeled by Robert Trent Jones in the 60’s. And, just recently, it faced another renovation, this time to restore the original 1920’s design with a flair of modern. And through all that – remodeling and restoration – it still remained Virginia’s top; the only course in the state to be included in Golf Magazine’s elite lists of America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses (#48) and the Top 100 in the World. That is, on top of being the consistent No. 1 Course in Virginia.

That shouldn’t be surprising. The Cascades Course sits in the stunning Allegheny Mountains – enough an assurance of a picture-perfect golf vacation. It is so beautiful that in fact, it is considered the most beautiful mountain course in the country. But it doesn’t stop there. The mountain’s natural topography has been the foremost influence in any game played here. Not so much as dictate, but influence in a way challenging to the better golfers and very generous to the handicap-challenged ones. In layout quality and beauty, this course is a definite topnotcher.

Thus, it is not surprising too that the Cascades Course has honed the careers of some of the world’s best. Topping the list of best golfers is the legendary Sam Snead who honed his championship skills in these very same greens. And with a very long and beautiful record as this, no wonder it is also topping the lists for America’s most favorite for golf trips.

Whistler Golf Club-Palmer Course

Arnold Palmer sure knows what to look for in a location for his next best golf vacation destination. When he was to build his first Canadian golf course, he chose the picturesque resort town of Whistler, and for obvious reasons. Snow capped mountains surrounding, thick natural mountain forests, abundant native wildlife, and the best possibilities on natural terrain flow – how could any golf course architect say no?And the result couldn’t be any more perfect: Whistler Golf Club – Palmer Course.

Broad fairways, glacier-fed lakes, man-made ponds, and a wide open wilderness bordered by the thicker of nature’s parts, the Whistler Golf Club – Palmer Course course is nature at Palmer’s best. What this legendary designer had in mind was to bring traditional golfing goodness in an unconventional layout – and by unconventional, he actually meant natural. The course follows the natural contours of the land, thereby giving more attitude and drama on the course’s elevation. And Whistler being Whistler, beautiful comes as natural as the fresh air. This creates a most perfect golf vacation scenario: scenic place, great golfing, and the best anyone could ask for in a holiday break.

And the goodness does not stop there. Apart from its high quality offering, the Whistler Golf Club – Palmer Course also offers some of the best services any guest could ask for in a golf trip facility. The service is so warm and welcoming that it feels like playing right at your own golf course. The practice area and facilities, too, live up to the bar of excellence set by the layout itself.

Big Sky Golf Club

Some courses are only big on size and lacking in quality. Others are the opposite – big fun, small size. Others have it all on scenic quality. Thankfully, there are those rare ones who are as big as their talk. And the Big Sky Golf Club in Whistler, BC, Canada is a most perfect example. This golf vacation destination is listed as a favorite among local and visiting golfers alike. And the reasons are quite clear.

The Big Sky Golf Club is big in size. At 7,001 yards playing for a par of 72, there is so much to do in this land overshadowed by the snow capped Mt. Currie. It would be hard to single out the most scenic part here when crystal clear natural water features, large native trees, and an overcast of a mountain straight out of an oil painting are in the choices. And just as big on the looks, golfers are also in for a massive challenge. Let the same stunning water features tell the tale. Its designer, Robert Cupp, was big on using the natural attributes of the property in coming up with this piece. On top of that, he has filled the course with best quality grass and sand for the greens, fairways, and the bunkers well shaped to define the course’s attitude. All that presented on four sets of tees make this course perfect for the biggest golf trips.

Because of its big qualities, it does not come off as a surprise that the Big Sky Golf Club is granted 4 ½ stars by Golf Digest’s Places to Play. It is also as natural that it has granted the golf vacation haven the Best Course in BC. No wonder this course is also big on happiness.

Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club

There is nothing too simple or fairly good about the Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club. If anything, this favored golf vacation destination just minutes from Vancouver has most everything in excess: beauty, playability, and challenge. And in all fairness to it, there is nothing excessive about that claim.

The Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club is a Les Furber design, measuring a good 6.641 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72. What is most noticeable about this course, as is apparent in its name, are the lakes. There are several lakes on the property that are connected by a canal. This allows for water play on 13 of its 18 holes. That is topped only by the presence of a total of 90 bunkers – and that combination only spells one thing: H-A-Z-A-R-D. Not to mention, breeze coming in from the Pacific makes its presence known in a manner that could never be mistaken as discreet. And it surely is felt on the scorecards as well. The course is further defined by very fast greens and some lush fairways. And since it has taken to heart its being excessive in excellence, golf vacations here are never just defined by the golf features. Mother Nature has her hand on this, to which the designer and the developers happily obliged.

Where scenery is concerned, the towering North Shore Mountain and surrounding Coast Mountain Ranges will take over. They make for a most stunning and most refreshing backdrop for the Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club. With a course that is a little too much of everything – everything good, that is – it would only be fair to say that golf trips here come in excess too; never stopping with firsts or seconds!

Blackwolf Run – Meadow Valleys Course

The Meadow Valleys Course of the Blackwolf Run Golf Club in Wisconsin is perhaps the best image of how Mother Nature would have created a golf course herself. This is the most unfazed natural Wisconsin terrain that a golf course could have, and it so good at being good it comes naturally. And there should not be anything surprising about its being excellent; it is a Pete Dye creation. Can a golf vacation destination be any less than best if it is a Dye?

Although mostly overshadowed by its more famous sibling course, the Meadow Valleys Course has its own set of merits. This golf vacation haven winds through natural valleys and deep ravines, as well as tall-grassed meadows all playing out the role of a hazard. And all that are natural – thereby giving the most exciting, most interesting changes in elevation that no other man-made facility could ever copy. On this particular course, Dye was being kind with the opening hole being a little kind and considerate, only to be countered rather surprisingly at the back nine of mostly wooded area. And when a golfer thinks the 18th hole is his reprieve for a most heartwrenching first 17 holes, the 18th will make a perfect culmination to the round. And it is something that no one could ever forget.

This superb quality of play that the Meadow Valleys Course offers is, just as naturally, recognized. The 7,142-yard, par 72 course ranked 60th in Golf Digest’s List of America’s 100 Greatest. And its unforgettable 18th hole was ranked among the world’s Top 500 holes. Well, if that is the case, golf trips here would feel like Mother Nature prepared it herself.

Irish Course – Whistling Straits Golf Club

It’s nothing like its sibling course, The Straits. There are none of the excessive elite status of the more famous course, but the Irish Course of the Whistling Straits Golf Club has its own merits that even its more ‘fabulous’ sibling could not topple. And that is its being well loved for playability and its undeniable versatility. When the Straits become too overrated to create a leisurely golf vacation, the discreet one is the best choice for a Wisconsin vacationer. And the surprises just keep pouring.

The Irish Course, like the Straits, is a Pete Dye marvel. Whilst the world is dying to try on the Straits for its PGA Championships reputation, this humble golf vacation destination just is not as simple as it presents itself. More critics actually find this a more interesting course – an inland layout of varying difficulty from one hole to another. The sand dunes and waste bunkers, among the must-watch-out-for features of a Dye course – are maintained rather minimally, to create a time-and-weather shaped hazard. And from the looks of it, and the reviews of it as well, everything they have done and have been doing with the course is effective.

When the Straits make use of the lake for its natural hazards, the Irish Course uses the ponds, deep ravines and little streams to give its punch more power. And power it is – it has created a name for itself as one of the favorite sites for golf trips. And with its length of 7,201 yards from the longest tees, par 72, the course is not merely as overwhelming as the Straits. Rising up to its own merits, this course will most easily pass up a rival for its own sibling course – in beauty, challenge, and fame.

Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club

Paraiso. The name could not exactly be any more fitting than that. The Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club in the Riviera Maya is a paradise within a paradise – a double treat for any guest, a heaven for the golf-loving guests. It was something only a PB Dye could make – to transform the Mayan jungle into the ultimate golf vacation destination.

The Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club is the latest of PB Dye’s masterpieces. On this particular creation, he has created a most interesting elevation magic on something that was relatively flat. But not to think that Dye has drastically changed the face of the ancient Mayan jungle. On the contrary, much of the dense tropical forest remains as a picturesque view. Dye also made use of the area’s natural rock formations to help keep the games interesting. They are, no doubt. And so are the golf vacations.

Visiting guests will also love the other signature Dye pieces on the course. He has laden the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club with narrow fairways, undulating greens, and bunkers that are deep and shaped the way only Dye could. And to make matters even better than they already are, the course measures all 6,800 yards from the tournament tees, plays for a par of 72. And the amenities are ones that would only match its being a paradise – from the driving range to putting greens to the clubhouse. It is a complete package of everything a dream golf trip should be and more. The paraiso that is the Mexican Caribbean and the glorious Mayan jungles have never seen itself more beautiful than now.

El Camaleon Golf Course

It does not exactly change its colors, that would be freaky. But this golf vacation destination was named after the chameleon for itsmore obvious and less scary feature: dynamic and diverse. The El Camaleon Golf Course would feel like playing many different courses on the same course at the same time.

The El Camaleon Golf Course is a cornucopia of different natural features. Golfers would be treated to the play along or through mangroves, tropical jungles and the golden shorelines of the Caribbean Sea surrounding the area. Its designer, Greg Norman worked on this course according to his design philosophy of creating the least intervention on nature in coming up with a tournament quality course. And this was achieved all too neatly. It wasn’t too hard, though. He didn’t do much on making it beautiful, it is beautiful in itself. What, with scenic, natural subterranean rivers that have been preserved well and acting as natural hazards, and the beautiful Carribean Sea making a lasting impression, there really is nothing more that any designer could do to make it more beautiful. What Norman had to do was bring a high-caliber golf course. It would be such an understatement to say that this goal was achieved. As a matter of fact, this chameleon changes faces from being a golf vacation haven into a top tournament facility.

And by top, it means the PGA Tour-quality kind of top. The El Camaleon Golf Course is the first golf course outside of the US and Canada to have hosted a PGA Tour, and it will keep on doing so in the coming years annually. Guests on golf trips here would effortlessly transition from being mere golfers to ‘happy golfers’, and there’s no going back from there!
