Reunion Resort – Independence Course

With a maximum length of 7,205 yards, par 72, and five sets of tees to play that with, there is no reason any golfer would ever feel restricted. The scenery ain’t too shabby either. At the Independence Course of the Reunion Resort, a golfer is free to play to full content, and reunite with the inner golf champion in him – and with friends and family as well! This is that one golf vacation destination that has perfected both the ‘golf’ and ‘vacation’ parts.

The Independence Course is designer Tom Watson’s first signature course in Florida. It features a windswept, links-style layout design that fits perfectly with the Florida climate. There are numerous deep pot bunkers scattered all over the course that define how difficult the course can get, if one allows it to be. But course pros assure that it is challenging but it is fair. It has enough grit to keep the golfers thinking throughout their rounds, but has as much softness to keep them smiling while at it. The greens are large, and the fairways are wide and rolling. The greens are as fast as the weather permits, but are in pristine condition all year round. Regardless, any time of the year, a golf trip here will always always be an interesting one.

And as interesting and beautiful as it is, it has managed to reap some hard earned awards. Amongst them is being Number 10 in America’s Best New Resort Course, one of Florida’s Best Public Access Courses, and America’s Best Resort Courses. With its offering of fun, challenging and stunning golf vacation experience, it is safe to say that the Independence Course sets each visiting golfer free to do and to be – just as every vacation should be.

Disney’s Palm Golf Club

There is nothing short of fabulous or amazing or beautiful when it comes to Disney. Everything about it falls under one or all of those adjectives; sometimes even more. Especially if it comes with the word Disney and Orlando, nothing could go wrong or ugly. Kids know that…and adults too! More so if they are golf loving adults who have had their shot at playing any of the five golf courses in the Disney World Resort, they will surely know how Disney spells fun and goodness. The Palm Golf Club is one perfect example. This is that one place that golfers would craft one golf vacation plan after another. It is seriously that awesome once is never enough.

Disney’s Palm Golf Club is one of the three Joe-Lee designs in the facility. It does not register as the longest one, but it sure has something to say in yardage – measuring a good 6,957 yards from the longest tees, par 72. What is most notable in this course is the harmonious blending of beauty and challenge perfectly woven into the natural Florida surroundings. There was little and controlled interference into the indigenous flora and fauna thus they grow abundantly in the property. In fact, alligators, deer, and native species of birds are a rather welcome sight to guests. That and its game-savvy features of tree-lined fairways, elevated tees, 9 water holes and over 90 sand bunkers all come together to create a wonderful potpourri of fun, challenge, and beauty all in one golf vacation destination.

Not surprisingly, Disney’s Palm Golf Club is on the list of the Top 75 in the United States; topping Florida’s list is a feat, let alone the country’s. But then again, this is Disney. It cannot NOT be fabulous or good. Everything Disney cannot be bad, even golf trips.

Disney’s Osprey Ridge Course

Disney’s Osprey Ridge Course could easily be the setting of any of the Disney classics. It would not be hard to imagine Aurora or Cinderella running the course, barefoot, with Prince Charming tailing behind. The only Tom Fazio-design in the Disney golf courses in Orlando (and the only one not designed by Joe Lee) also brings together a very feminine feel. Not that it is shorter or easier to suit the lady golfers. The female touch of this golf vacation destination comes in the curves of the course, and its natural sense of caring and preservation – for nature that is.

Bordered mostly by forests of pines, cypresses, palmettos, and bay trees, Disney’s Osprey Ridge Course boasts of its well-preserved wetlands that serve as sanctuary for many wild birds. And this effort to preserve and maintain them at their natural state has been recognized with a Certification from the International Audubon Society as a Sanctuary – that is among the less than a thousand certifications from all courses around the world. And they offer really great golfing too. At 7,101 yards, par 72, with four sets of tees to choose from, this golf vacation favorite features nine holes on water, dramatically elevated greens and tees, and some 70 beautiful bunkers.

Those features are almost synonymous to saying this is one pretty course. But just as tough. Disney’s Osprey Ridge Course brings to life a femme fatale of a golf trip haven – as beautiful and dangerous and outright memorable. Not much of a Cinderella then, but more likely a Mulan. Either way, it is just as magical. This is Disney after all, how can it not be?

Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Course

Disneyworld may be every child’s (and child-at-heart’s) fairy tale dream come true kind of place but the completely grown-up golf loving human beings may find their own fantasy-to-reality golf vacation paradise hereabouts. And that is at Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Course. It is not as pixie-dust glittery as the place for kids, but sure does have its own way of appealing to the golfers, albeit less glittery and flashy.

Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Course is a Joe Lee design that could easily be described as fun and exciting and challenging. And it is – all 6,819 yards of it. It plays for a par of 72, with four sets of tees to choose from, perfect to delight more golfers regardless of their handicap levels. As much as they are visual treats, the signature Florida features of palmettos and pines and sparkling lakes and straight-out-of-a-Disney-movie pastel-colored villas are playing the role of hazards. Bunkered greens here are well elevated and small – as is the whole golf course which is small and tight – but with surprisingly wide and huge fairways. This undeniable beauty and excellence in layout quality is the reason why golfers are not the only ones drawn to this course; even the stars have come down on this golf vacation destination.

Well, course star ratings that is. Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Course has 4 out of 5 stars from Golf Digest Magazine. And the services and amenities are those fitting even for the royals in all those well-loved Disney classics. That’s a promise of a happy-ending to every golf trip right there.

Grand Cypress Golf Club – New Course

This is the closest anyone can get to the Old Course at St Andrew’s. Well, for the most part. What Jack Nicklaus has channeled successfully from the historic course was the feel of it, the 1st and the last holes, and the necessity of playing excellently a la British Open. But whether or not the New Course at the Grand Cypress Golf Club is more Scotland or more Florida, there is no question as to its being excellent and exceptional. The golf vacation experience offered here is just like nowhere in Europe and in the US. Or anywhere for that matter.

The New Course plays 6,773 yards from the longest tees, par 72. It is among the true links-style courses in America. The 150 deep pot bunkers have made it so. And whilst it does not claim to be a St Andrew’s replica, it brings the feel of the Old Course through the stone walls, winding creeks and a stone bridge to complete the look. And all these features on very wide fairways, with truly fast greens add to the attitude of this golf course. And a golf course as excellent as this requires for each golfer to be as excellent and ready to take on its hazards and obstacles – many of which are hidden. Thus the golf vacation destination comes complete with practice facilities of similar caliber.

From the chipping greens to golf academy, learning and practicing is very much true to the idea of getting ready for a round at the New Course. And the stay options are as excellent. This is not exactly St Andrews, and this is very much a Florida golf trip in every sense. The experience here is as unique as playing the British Open right in the heart of Disney City.

Championsgate Golf Resort – National Course

Going to the Championsgate Golf Resort in Orlando is like being in three different places all at the same time. Its 36-hole golf vacation destination feels tad larger than it is, thanks to Greg Norman and his creations that are an ode to variety and uniqueness. The International Course, true to its name, brings to Florida the best features of the celebrated courses of Scotland and Northern Ireland, whilst adding a taste of Florida. The National Course, on the other hand, is a celebration of the best features of American golfing. Well, it is the national after all.

The National Course measures shorter in yardage than the International at a little more than 7,100 yards to the latter’s 7,300++. Unlike the links style of the International, this course has highlighted many of the area’s natural features. It sits on acres and acres and acres of woodlands, natural wetlands and lush fairways and greenways. And just as Floridan as it can get, the course has several stunning albeit challenging array of water hazards complimented by the presence of 80 sculpted bunkers. The most noticeable characteristic of this course is that it starts good and finishes at its best – with what is known to have some of America’s best stretch of finishing holes. It just gets better, longer. Who would want to end a golf vacation like this?

With courses as great as the International and the National Course, the Championsgate Golf Resort is unsurprisingly listed among Orlando’s, Florida’s and America’s best. Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, Golfweek and Zagat Golf Guide will agree and prove. There would be nowhere else one would want to be for their most epic golf trips.

Treetops Resort – Traditions Course

The Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan, aside from its reputation of ranking amongst the best golf vacation destinations in America, has a reputation for being aptly named. Its courses speak for themselves – the Masterpiece, the Premier, the Signature. They are as much a masterpiece, a premier, and yes, more literally, a signature course respectively. The Traditions Course is no different.

Designer Rick Smith indeed has brought the game a little further back to history with his work on the Traditions Course. The course features a links-style layout complete with wooded pins and pennant flags. It has a slightly rolling hill terrain but is very suitable for walking and the greens are smaller and are actually less undulating that its sibling courses in the resort. The uphill shots add a little more flavor to the game. From the longest tees, this golf vacation favorite measures 6, 467 yards and plays for a par of 70.

At the Traditions Course, the golfers will be allowed to choose whether to play on full 18 or just play a 9-hole game. The front nine goes back to the starter house, giving golfers the freedom to end their round right there, or move on to a more challenging game towards the 18th. The features here are virtually the same with those in its sibling courses, only more forgiving. Rolling terrain, wooded areas, undulating greens – almost the same but not quite; but equally challenging, fun and memorable no less. The course not only brings a traditional flair in its features; it brings back the good ol’ happy days of golf trips of yesteryears.

Treetops Resort – Signature Course

Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan is a highly notable display of golf course design greats. It has Robert Trent Jones Sr’s last Michigan project (Masterpiece Course) for one. It also has Tom Fazio’s first and only Course in the Great Lakes state (Premier Course). And if that is not enough, it also has Rick Smith’s first full length 18-hole golf course – the Signature Course. And for a first golf vacation destination project, it was not too shabby. Not shabby at all; in fact, it was even excellent.

The Signature Course measures a good 6,653 yards from the longest tees and plays for a par of 70. What is most notable here are Smith’s usage of the natural terrain and other features of the property where the course is located. The high upland location gives the course a rolling terrain – of undulation and elevation changes bonanza, all these exist here in great abundance. Smith coupled this with wide and highly forgiving fairways so the course remains as playable as it is challenging. Heavily wooded natural areas were kept as they were, thereby playing a role in making the course beautiful and yes, still, challenging. Rest assured, golfers will have a very engaging golf vacation here every time – be it first time or nth time.

On top of that, the course comes with five sets of tees that are friendlier to more golfers. The Signature Course is so friendly that it is actually quite popular among the ladies, being ranked among the Top 50 Courses for Women. With that and its promise of dramatic views of the surrounding paradise, golf trips here never end with just the first.

Treetops Resort – Premier Course

When Treetops Resort’s Masterpiece Course was created, Robert Trent Jones Sr made sure his creation was true to its name. It was, without a doubt, a masterpiece right to the very essence of the word. And when they opened the Premier Course, they in fact and indeed opened a golf vacation destination of premier caliber. And it took a golf course designer of the same caliber to deliver it. And this was achieved with no less than the Tom Fazio himself.

The Premier Course is part of the 81-hole golf resort, Treetops, in Gaylord, Michigan. The other courses in the facility were created by other top caliber designers the likes of Rick Smith and Trent Jones Sr. But Tom Fazio would never be fazed by his counterparts, and his creation would speak of it. At more than 6,800 yards, par 72, the four sets of tees at the Premier ensure that more golfers, handicap notwithstanding, will enjoy a round or two here. No wonder this is a
golf vacation
favorite.

But more than just a golf trip paradise, the resort doubles as a ski vacation destination in wintertime. This explains why the Premier Course has some of the most interesting, albeit challenging, elevation changes in all of Michigan golf courses. All throughout the course there are elevated tee boxes and downhill shots as well as undulation that is pretty much unheard of elsewhere. The thick growth of trees in the property all the more takes the level of challenge a notch or two higher. Now, if this and its being a “premier” course through and through is not interesting enough, perhaps the fact that this is the first and only Tom Fazio design in Michigan is.

The Rookery Golf Club

One of the marks of a great golf vacation destination is its overall quality. A golf course must be able to take care of its guests pre-, during, and post-game. The facilities and amenities for each of these stages must come in good enough quantities so as to compliment – and not drown out – each other. The Rookery Golf Club in Milton, Delaware, though often understated, is one fine example.

This golf course, the result of the collaboration of two golf greats Pete Oakley and Chris Adkins, takes care of the pre-game needs at their natural putting and chipping areas. The game per se is made fun, exciting with the right kick of challenging thanks to the 12 water holes present in the golf course. All 6,400 plus yards of the Rookery Golf Club has an equal distribution of water in its 18 holes – a factor that boosts the challenge to an otherwise fair game. A combination of natural and man-made features make this golf vacation favorite even more challenging.

The post-game delights are well taken cared of, thanks to a very impressive grille, the Blue Heron Grille. Golfers are treated here to what could only be described as proper pampering, whether to relax or fill in oneself with some well-deserved gastronomic indulgence. Although, this post-game implement is questionable as a post-game. Others get on it head-on, even before the game starts! But that does not matter, though. That just further proves that at the Rookery Golf Club, golf trips are at its most best – every second of it!
