Bonaventure Country Club – West Course

Size is not all that matters. Shorter does not necessarily mean less exciting or less playable – and that is talking about golf courses. Proof to that is the West Course of the Bonaventure Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The golf vacation destination may come up shorter than its sister course, the East course, in length, but never shorter on the quality of play. It has as much challenge as there are in longer, bigger courses.

The West Course of the Bonaventure Country Club measures 6,128 yards from the back tees, a good thousand yards shorter than the East’s 7,158 yards, but the par-70 West Course is not an inch short of fun. Its wide fairways and undulating greens, and shorter yardage, may trick golfers into thinking it is gonna be easy. But the hole design will prove them otherwise. The deceiving numbers and easy-looking hole placement will test both the golfer’s choice of club, and his patience. It is a golf vacation made not for the faint of heart.

Although that being said, let it not be known that the West Course of the Bonaventure Country Club is a sadist of sorts. The lush tropical vegetation and the abundant wildlife in the course will soften any toughie on the course. It could be the course’s way of making up for the heartbreak on the scorecards. The 18-hole Mark Mahannah design that debuted in 1975 does not need to live up to the reputation of its sister course. This is not a place for short golf trips, but for rounds and rounds of golf.

Bayonet Black Horse – Bayonet Course

If any course in North America deserves the honor of five full stars for being beautiful and challenging, it would be Bayonet Course of the Bayonet-Black Horse Golf Club. That, and its sibling course, the Black Horse. The course has, since 1954, hosted several US Presidents and even more foreign dignitaries. For these heads of the state to bring the nation’s most important guests for a game here, there must be something so special about this golf vacation destination. And for it to last more than half a century and still rank among the best in California, there’s not a reason not to believe there is indeed something so extraordinary about it.

General Robert McClure originally designed the course. Gen. McClure’s design was characterized by fairways lined with cypresses and oaks and a stunning view of the Monterey Peninsula. It was beautiful in its old form, it was ethereal in its recent overhaul – under the skillful hands of no less than Gene Bates. The renovated Bayonet Course of the Bayonet-Black Horse Golf Club now features more challenging hole placement, more trees, and a wider, more breathtaking view of the Monterey Bay. And of course, the signature Gene Bates sand bunkers that might as well add the sixth star to the course’s many merits. The guests must simply expect nothing less than the best from their golf vacations here.

The 18-hole, par-72 Bayonet Course of the Bayonet-Black Horse Golf Club has five sets of tees, measuring 7,104 yards from the longest tees. If the quality of this golf course has fascinated and impressed heads of states over the years, it should not be any different for golf trips of true blue golf aficionados. And happy and satisfied golfers are bigger than any honor for any golf trip.

Mount Woodson Golf Club

Mount Woodson Golf Club is as touching to a golfer as dramatic movies are to a hopeless romantic. This place has the most dramatic golf course settings in the San Diego County characterized by the breathtaking ancient oaks, big granite boulders, and sparkling lakes that serve as the key ingredients in its immensely scenic and natural golfing surrounding. The striking environment of this place shows that even golf trips can be touching too.

Mount Woodson Golf Club is a 6,000-yard, par-72 layout. Its challengingly tight fairways make use of the rolling terrain that also ensures an abundance of magnificent views along the way. A meandering 450-foot wooden bridge and dramatic hillside holes make for a fun and outstanding golf experience. The thick, grassy mounds, strategically placed bunkers, and water hazards are the source of troubles. At the best of times tricky, downright vicious if the wind is blowing, a golf vacation here requires the golfers to stretch the limits of their skills at the same time fascinate them with its unique setting.

The elevation changes throughout Mount Woodson Golf Club help define the special character of Mt. Woodson where the challenge and enjoyment of every hole have been captured with these names: “The Plunge”, “The Chute”, “Tree Tops”, “Drop Off”. As one of the region’s most enjoyable courses to play, having a golf vacation at this club grants the golf drama that every player wishes for because of the great challenge and undeniable beauty of the place.

The Crossings at Carlsbad

There are many things that make a golf course beautiful. But there are two essential things that course designers strive to achieve in creating an ideal golf vacation destination: great layout and an even better scenery. If they have come up with a layout that is both interesting and challenging, all the while capturing the best views their course locations could offer, they know they have done a great job. The Crossings at Carlsbad in San Diego is an example.

Located perfectly, the Crossings at Carlsbad has both accessibility and stunning views. It is only a good half hour drive from downtown San Diego and about a mile from the Pacific ocean. But the good things about this golf vacation hotspot do not end there. The challenging and unique canyon terrain and the risk-reward game give golfers a good test of skills. The course also serves as a haven not only for the lovers of the sport but of the natural wildlife found in the area as well. As much as the management maintains the course conditions to a world-class quality, it also works to keep nature at its best. The Greg Nash design that stretches to 6,835 yards has all of its 18-holes sitting on a thousand acres of perfection from man’s collaboration with nature.

The Crossings at Carlsbad, unsurprisingly, is a favorite among golfers for golf trips and golf publications for awards. It has the highest ranking among the San Diego courses, and was voted by GOLF Magazine readers as among the Top 10 Courses You Can Play. That, among many others of course. Needless to say, the course is beyond ideal, it even borders on perfect.

Temecula Creek Inn Golf Club

The thing people look forward to the most about golf vacations is to have as much golf as they want to, however way they please. These occasions do not happen everyday and they must be perfect. Some golf resorts deliver. Some do not. But true to San Diego’s reputation of being a golfing haven, golfers are assured they will find that perfect course that will let them live out their dream golf getaways. This is what the Temecula Creek Inn Golf Club promises – AND DELIVERS.

The golf vacation destination is made of three nine-hole courses that are as varied from each other as they are as beautiful. The Temecula Creek Inn Golf Club features a variety of views and terrain characteristics that make the nines a combination of challenging and stunning. The Creek nine boasts of a traditional layout while the Oak nine is of sweeping mountain views. The Stonehouse nine, on the other hand, is best known for its highly dramatic elevation changes. Playing a short round in one of the courses, or playing a combination of two will definitely be the kind of golfing experience that could only be described as incomparable.

These qualities of the Temecula Creek Inn Golf Club have made quite an impression that Golf Digest’s Places to Play has ranked it with four stars. And who would not? Apart from three one-of-a-kind golfing experience it offers, it also has the most complete amenities for golf trips – from lodging to clubhouse to practice greens to just about everything else. The entire facility spells VACATION in bold; it makes it easy to figure out why this is a choice destination for when golfers want to be who and what they want to be.

Salt Creek Golf Course

In a county like San Diego, where golf courses are just a little over a dime a dozen, how certain courses manage to stand out is a huge feat. The requirements are not necessarily easy. These golf vacation destinations have to have heaven on their side, with a good helping of well-placed holes and an even greater scenery around it, to make it to this elite list of San Diego’s best. Fortunately for Salt Creek Golf Course, it has constantly ranked among the top ones – and has a great probability of staying there for a long, long time.

One reason why the Salt Creek Golf Course is a standout is because it is the only Scottish links style course in the area. It is bordered on almost all sides by natural wetlands and overshadowed by the majestic Mt Miguel. Its interesting terrain was optimized by its designers, John Cook and Carl Bickler, to provide a golf layout that goes beyond fun and relaxing but push the golfers to the best of their abilities. The 18-hole, par-72 golf vacation favorite measures 6,588 yards from the back tees, with no homes in sight, thus giving golfers an untarnished view of the beautiful surroundings – including an overview of the Pacific ocean.

To say that golfers prefer the Salt Creek Golf Course for their SoCal golf trips because of its challenging layout and stunning scenery is pointing out the obvious and saying the least. The other amenities on the course are equally noteworthy: the practice and chipping greens are excellent and maintained to perfection (as are everything else on the facility), and the services are nothing short of world-class. It is not surprising at all why it is among Southern California’s Top 50 courses, and ranked among the top places to play.

Sycuan Resort – Oak Glen Course

To be surrounded by some of the most beautiful sights and still be able to stand out as amongst the more beautiful ones is a difficult feat. But it was all too easily achieved by the Oak Glen Course of the Sycuan Resort. Being in San Diego does not make it any easy for this golf vacation destination to stand out, considering the hundreds of other stunning and more expensive golf resorts in the area. Being surrounded by a majestic panorama of hills does not help either. But this course, remodeled in the late 1980s by Ted Robertson and Dave Fleming is simply too incredible, no golfer would ever miss it even if the world hides it among an ocean of jewels.

The 18-hole par-72 course is part of a grand 54-hole golf resort facility considered among the top favorites for golf vacations in the golf course-laden area. The Oak Glen Course of the Sycuan Resort is divided on two 9-hole loops, each nine bearing an attitude of its own, and collectively brings some of the most beautiful views and most challenging layouts in the San Diego golfing scene. It is a rather flat course and it is only in specific tees could the elevation changes be felt; its fairways are lined by huge oaks, pines and eucalyptus trees. The true challenge of this course comes where the Sweetwater River makes its appearance, along with other ponds. They give a true meaning to the word “hazard” in this course.

With its stunning surroundings and challenging layout, not to mention the impeccable conditioning, the Oak Glen Course of the Sycuan Resort blends too perfectly with its already beautiful location. It is a testament that golf trips so epic could still happen.
