Crandon Park Golf Club at Key Biscayne

Nature is indeed the best accessory any golf course will ever have. Whilst many golf vacation destinations have resorted to moving the earth and creating a new “face” to a property, others have had better sense. But then again, if the property in question is the island park of Key Biscane, the piece of paradise ten minutes off downtown Miami, it would be hard to ignore and alter Mother Nature’s work here. The Crandon Park Golf Club has been the prime centerpiece of Key Biscayne, and it will be this way for a very, very long time.

The original Bruce Devlin/Robert Von Hagge have been partly recreated – the greens mostly, but the project was more a restoration than a renovation. And it has never been any better. The Crandon Park Golf Club features a layout measuring more than 7,300 yards from the back tees, par 72, all set amidst and through mangrove thickets, saltwater lakes and some of the most challenging sand traps in Miami. Many of the holes are overlooking the beautiful Biscayne Bay. If that is not enough a distraction to any game, then nature will take its course and make a mark on anybody’s golf vacation.

And by anybody, it means anybody including the big names in golf like Ray Floyd, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, and Arnold Palmer. They have all fallen prey to, if not the views, nature in its many forms in the Crandon Park Golf Club. They may be the alligators, the iguanas roaming freely about, or the many different species of birds that are as common here as the holes themselves. That, or the wind. Either way, nature and man will live harmoniously on this golf trip haven, and it will be this way for a very, very long time.

Turnberry Isle Miami – Soffer Course

Longer. Tougher. Better. Prettier. Soffer. Thankfully, the Soffer Course is not as it sounds – golfers do not suffer on their golf vacations here. Not at all. On the contrary. One of the two Turnberry Isle Resort courses in Miami was making waves when it first opened more than thirty years ago; even more so now with its now face, new everything.

The Soffer Course was, like its sibling course the Miller, an original Robert Trent Jones Sr creation and went through an extensive overhaul in 2007 under the genius of renowned contemporary designer Raymond Floyd. What was once a typical Florida course of flat, watery layout was transformed into one of very impressive and exciting movements on the elevation. The water remains a traditional Florida layout – plenty, but now with more work done on the landscaping to make it even more beautiful that it already is. The best thing about this golf vacation destination is the part where it paris its remarkable beauty with astonishing play quality.

And astonishing as it is, golf trippers are not the only ones who fancy this course. Several tournament organizers have developed a liking to the Soffer Course that they make it the host of their competitions. In this course’s resume are several LPGA Tournaments and the ADT Golf Skills Challenge. There is no suffering here, only happiness. Golf trips here are simply, and without a doubt, better and merrier. The course measures 7,047 yards from the longest tees and plays for a par of 71.

Doral Resort – Red Course

Red in the Red Course at Doral is not red as in fierce, hot and feisty. On the contrary. Red on this golf vacation favorite is love bubbles. This Miami course, despite lacking the domineering and daunting grit its siblings have, is one of the most lovable courses in the famed Doral Resort.

The Red Course could easily be likened to everyone’s favorite cousin. She is not the most famous in the family but rest assured, she will always, always be a delightful company and a reason why vacations are happy. This golf vacation destination is short and is probably the simplest of the courses, measuring only a short 6,146 yards from the tips, par 70, with 5 sets of tees for every golfer. What is most appreciated about this course is the fact that its holes are well balanced – sprinkled equally on the both sides of the course. And these holes are strategically guarded by any of the course’s 68 sand bunkers and water hazards. Most of them are, in fact, playing with water – 14 of the 18 holes to be exact. This golf vacation destination could not get any better, can it?

That is until one actually plays the course, and only then will things escalate into the best golf experience yet. While this has none of the intimidation of PGA favorite Blue Monster, or the length of the Great White, the Red Course has its own paprika red kick to it. That comes in, ironically, the greens. The Bermuda greens run true and mildly undulating, albeit small in size. All the more challenging, with that much of sand and water and very little greens, shot accuracy is a definite must. That said, falling in love with golf trips here could not get any easier.

Doral Resort – Great White Course

One of the biggest things a golf course – or anything for that matter – goes through in one’s lifetime are big changes. As for golf vacation destinations, these changes mean risks – especially if these courses were known for and regarded for being excellent just as they are. Doral Resort’s Great White Course, the Greg Norman creation, faced and conquered the same all too easily. And beautifully at that.

The Great White Course is one of the five championship golf courses at the Doral Resort. While the Blue Monster is the most well-known of the five for the PGA Tour stint, the Great White is not on the least list either. It is actually known for being the most beautiful and most unique being the only one that uses coquina shells for bunkers on every hole. The course was already known for being tough on the toughies and a fun experience for the high-handicaps. This feature was retained, and the rest made even better. Today, this golf vacation favorite is known for wide fairways bordered by hundreds of native palms, undulating greens made of prime native grass, remodeled bunkers, and water playing on all but four holes.

Measuring a whooping 7, 171 yards from the tips, the par 72 golf trip spectacle has also seen development on its drainage system. They made amends on the course’s cart paths, making the renovation even more beneficial for both the course and the player. And Greg Norman being Greg Norman, naturally, the original layout and the renovation both made very little impact environmentally. Great White Course took as much risk, and now enjoys as much benefits. This is perfectly a change for the best.

Doral Resort – TPC Blue Monster Course

This course must easily be the most recognizable course in all of America. Anyone who follows the PGA Tour too closely must have seen this course at least once every year for the past half a century or so. Why so, this course has been hosting the PGA Tour since 1962. There is no telling just how many champions it has made from generation to generation. The TPC Blue Monster Course is, obviously, more than just anybody’s average golf vacation destination.

At the TPC Blue Monster Course, nothing is close to being mediocre. Why would the PGA come back here one year after another if this Dick Wilson design did not fit the requirements? The most apparent and famous feature of the course are the 8 mini-lakes that are sprinkled all over the course to make for really, really daunting water hazards. These water features are also credited for the course’s first name, ‘Blue’; the rest of the courses gave the second. The ‘rest’ of the course includes strategically placed bunkers and undulating fairways that make the course a truly challenging one – the kind that challenges even the best of the sport. How is that for a golf trip experience?

Without a doubt, the TPC Blue Monster Course is an institution, a classic, and a certified must-try in the Florida golfing scene. And probably in the entire US Golf as well. No golf vacation here would ever go unnoticed or forgotten. Not even plain and simple. And it will be that way from generation to generation.

Hawk’s Landing Golf Club

Hawk’s Landing Golf Club has got to be one of the most interesting of golf courses in the Central Florida area. Not to mention, it is also one the most beautiful. While unlike the others that are either too “man-made”, and some are too “natural”, this golf vacation destination is that one course that perfectly balances it. It is a 50-50 share of nature, with its wide selection of native Florida vegetation of queen palms, oaks, sand pines and beautiful jasmines and azaleas among others. The other 50 of human genius, is the magnanimous Orlando World Center Marriott Resort that is at the forefront of this exquisite facility. This is one course that perfectly suits what a ‘golf vacation destination‘ exactly is.

The course sits on a 220-acre property right outside of the hotel. Surprisingly, though, when the games are on, the hotel just sits at the background, that is so easily ignored. The beautiful features and the fun play are a golfer’s best distraction here. Hawk’s Landing Golf Club features a very flat layout that is common in Florida courses, but this should never lure golfers into thinking it’s going to be an easy ride. Trees, water and bunkers have been placed on this golf vacation favorite for a reason and it is nto just the aesthetics.

At over 6,800 yards from the longest tees, par 71, with three other sets of tees, the course gives an ultimate fun but fair challenge to golfers despite the skill level. Hawk’s Landing Golf Club is beautiful and playable – golf trips can never go wrong here. It brings the kind of golf that makes it worth the trip.

Orange Lakes Resort – The Reserve

Renovations are meant to improve what is already there. But how does one improve something that has since been known as excellent? How does an artist create a new level of ‘excellent’ to top that which is already loved for so long? This has been the burden that golf course architect Mike Dasher had to face when he recreated The Reserve Course at the Orange Lakes Resort in Kissimmee, Florida. This golf vacation destination was the original Resort course in the facility, with an even more stellar name at the helm – Joe Lee. And the result speaks for itself and for Dasher.

The course is now an 18-hole spectacle, par-71, that winds through water, sand and trees. All that combines for some of the most memorable, and most exciting golf vacation experiences anyone could ever find in the Central Florida area. The course is a little heavy on the bunkering, but Dasher made room for landing areas. Thus the fair challenge. The greens are rolling and winds through well preserved wetlands and marshlands. It was so well-preserved that it had to be called “The Reserve” to speak for this incredible feat.

Mike Dasher also added more water features to the course, thereby giving the golf trip favorite a more vibrant, more distinct, more beautiful course of varied textures – rolling greens, pristine and sparkling waters, and natural marshlands. With the Reserve course, Dasher did not only improve the original layout – he created an entirely new course that is the best this side of the country has seen.

Stonegate Golf Club – Oaks Course

In creating a Florida golf layout, a designer does not simply move earth and do as he pleases. No, sir. Florida’s natural topography and other natural features are too diverse, too interesting, and too beautiful to simply be interrupted without restrain. The designer must know how to blend well with whatever there is; a Floridan golf course that looks like a masterpiece both by nature and man is the mark of a true genius. One perfect example of this is the Oaks Course in Kissimmee. This is that one course that transforms a golf trip into a nature trip.

The Oaks Course is part of the 36-hole facility, the Stonegate Golf Club. The other one, the Cypress, is a Clifton, Ezell, Clifton. The Oaks on the other hand is a Ron Garl original layout, characterized by oversized fairway bunkers and waste areas, mounds, and rolling fairways. The greens are slightly elevated. All these features of the course are set on a backdrop of natural marshlands and wetlands, snaking through huge oak hammocks other native vegetation growing abundantly in the property. Beautiful, yes. Hazardous, even more so. If that is not interesting enough yet, then the water holes – eleven in total, will bring the extra to the ordinary golf vacations here.

The golf vacation destination has 4 sets of tees, ranging from 5,285 yards the shortest, par-72, and stretching to 7,011 yards the longest, par-72. Achieving the goal of creating a nature friendly course as the Oaks Course has got to be tough on the designer. But it was achieved. And the biggest reward has to be all the beautiful golf getaways spent here with a picturesque background of Florida’s natural flora and fauna. This is bringing out the best in both the designer and the environment.

Remington Golf Club

The design team of Clifton, Ezell, Clifton have made quite an impression in the Orlando golfing scene. Their Orlando portfolio includes quite a lot of best sellers, including Kissimmee Bay Golf Club, Stoneybrook East Golf Club, King’s Ridge Golf Club, and the Remington Golf Club. The last one holds a close semblance to the Kissimmee Bay, and are amongst the most recognized golf vacation destinations both as a CEC creation and a go-to place for golfers visiting Orlando.

Remington Golf Club is an 18-hole course that stretches to a whooping 7,111 yards from the longest tees, par-72. It is conveniently located just a short ten-minute drive from the Orlando International Airport, making it a great option for golf vacations. Golfers need not go far to experience what brand of excellence in golfing this 4-star rated golf course has to offer them. Like most every Florida course, water is abundant here. These water features are paired with generous landing areas and undulating fairways, not to mention verdant greens with an abundance of native vegetation.

The course comes with 5 sets of tees, making golf trips here even more inviting and accommodating for all types of golfers. Even more so, it has a unique water driving range and huge practice areas for that perfect warmup to an even better round. Clifton, Ezell, Clifton have clearly sealed their legacy in the Central Florida golfing scene. Remington Golf Club is, without a doubt, at par with all the other excellent courses crafted by this trio.

Kissimmee Oaks Golf Club

This is one golf course that would go down the books for being a classic Florida design. The joint creation of Karl Litten and Gary Player has become such a hit that it is hard not to stop by for a round here when on an Orlando golf trip. The Kissimmee Oaks Golf Club and its natural terrain and even more natural features and hazards has got golfers – local and visiting alike – charmed and hooked.

The Kissimmee Oaks Golf Club measures close to 7,000 yards from the longest tees and plays for a par of 72. Apart from the obvious presence of oaks growing liberally about the course– which are more than a hundred years old, by the way – the golf vacation destination also enjoys a healthy sprinkling of tropical vegetation that include pampas and cypress trees. And just as classic a Florida course this is, this course has a lot of water. Several lakes come into play on ten of the 18 holes – all of which are equally challenging and awe-striking in beauty. This course cannot be anything other than beautiful.

Even its being part of a high-end residential community does not make it less beautiful. The designers have successfully routed this course away from the homes that it feels like there is nothing more here than the narrow-looking fairways, small greens, and a lot of nature that includes native fauna along with the natural flora selection. With all its merits, not only would the Kissimmee Oaks Golf Club go down the books for being a classic Floridan; it will also go down the books to be among Florida’s most irresistible and most unforgettable site for golf vacations.
