Prim Valley Golf Club – Desert Course

Tom Fazio is course design brilliance personified, hands down. The Nevada Desert is a golden paradise of canyons and boulders that glow under the usually unforgiving sun, no doubt. Now to put the two together on the same sentence, any golfer’s imagination could go wild. But when it hits reality, it is not as wild. Though a bit rugged on the edges where the desert is most present, the course is a beautiful haven, a golfers’ retreat in the middle of the desert. Anyone who has played the Desert Course of the Prim Valley Golf Club in Nevada definitely knows this. And it does not take more than a single golf vacation to fall madly in love with it.

The design of the Desert Course seemed like a most appropriate ode by the designer to nature. Fazio, as excellent as he is, managed to create a course that highlights the desert the way spotlights would a superstar onstage. And he made it in a way that makes golfers feel like the desert and the golf vacation destination are one and nothing stands in his way to be with it. On top of that, there are seemingly endless stretches of sand bunkers, cactus, palm trees, native desert vegetation, and some of the most stunning water features to give the golfer something to think about when playing this course.

With a length that measures up to 7,131 yards from the longest tees, par 72, there is indeed a LOT to think about at the Desert Course. It is the seamless combination of what golf course architecture could give and what nature has already gifted us with. Needless to say, golf trips here are unequaled.

Tuscany Golf Club

Sometimes, the best way to enjoy life is to think outside the box. Whilst many people rave about all the great things in central Vegas, and while golfers scramble to get to the best there is within the city, the knowing golfers choose to go outside. Outside the city that is. Henderson, Nevada, a mere thirty minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, holds a wonderful secret in its midst: a golf vacation destination that features everything good thinkable about a desert course, The Tuscany Golf Club.

This is not Italy but it is definitely a bellisima course, with almost 7,000 yards of golf, par 72. Since its opening in 2003, it has seen a change or two in its continuous desire for improvement, and today it could not get any better. Desert landscape, impeccably maintained greens, palms and pine trees, arroyos, large bunkers, and water features at just the right areas. Ted Robinson has designed this course to blend so well with nature it gives the feeling that Tuscany Golf Club has been there since the day the world began. It is a world away from the rest of the world – ON ONE SIDE that is, with the views of the surrounding mountains. But the view of the Las Vegas skyline on the other side is a reminder that one is on a golf vacation at one of the world’s most beautiful places.

And the heavens must have heard, the fees at the Tuscany Golf Club are very affordable. For a golf course of this caliber, it sure is a good bargain! It does pay to think outside the box, to widen one’s horizons. In this case, literally. And literally, too, golf trips here will be very, very fun.

The Arroyo Golf Club at the Red Rock

Not every course in the country gives its daily fee golfers the same royal treatment they give their members. In fact, such a golf course is a rare find. Las Vegas’ The Arroyo Golf Club at the Red Rock is one such course. Guests would more than likely feel part of its gated community, The Summerlin. And if things seem to not go any better than that, golfers only need to start on their daily round to know that the layout is just as top notch. This is one golf vacation destination that truly understands what a vacation is for – and how it should be served.

The Arroyo Golf Club at the Red Rock is a signature Arnold Palmer design. It measures a little over 6,800 yards from the longest tees, with five sets of tees, par 72. It features stunning views of the nearby Red Rock Canyon and Spring Mountain, and that sight alone is more than welcoming. Golf vacations here begin with a very pleasant cart ride from the clubhouse to the driving range. Every single thing a golfer would need for his day out on the greens is well provided, including sunscreen. And the rest of the way, the Palmer layout will do the talking.

Generous landing areas, water on five holes, and 68 sculpted white sand bunkers make their way around the course spread on bentgrass greens whose maintenance could not be anything other than impeccable. And as with any Palmer design, shot accuracy and a lot of brains are a staple. The offerings at the clubhouse is a perfect cap off to anyone’s day at the Arroyo Golf Club at the Red Rock. A single golf trip here would leave golfers thinking about permanently residing here and vacation on a daily basis.

Rio Secco Golf Club

The rest of the world know Las Vegas for the casinos and the parties that happen here and “stay” here. But the avid golfers know that there is more to Vegas than that. The Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson is known to give the best golf experience this side of the country. And this is one of those Sin City activities that they more than gladly share to friends. Well, not that it needed more advertising. Its name itself is synonymous to epic golf vacations.

The Rio Secco Golf Club opened in 1997 and was designed by no less than the legendary Rees Jones. It measures over 7,400 yards from the longest and most difficult tees; its four sets of tees, however, give it a different flavor and make it more enjoyable for more golfers of lower handicaps. The whole golf course is spread on three different grounds, making it as versatile as it is interesting. Golfers are treated to six holes served on steep canyons, another six on a plateau with an overlooking view of Las Vegas, and another six sit on a desert wash. What makes it all the more unique is that, this golf vacation destination has all the classical elements present in any Las Vegas desert golf course, but it offers quite an experience like no other.

It is this unequaled quality of golfing that merited the Rio Secco Golf Club all its colorful accolades throughout the years. It has been named among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses” by Golf Digest and voted No. 1 Public Access Course in Nevada (Las Vegas PGA). And that is just among the many reasons why this place is popular. This is the golf trip counterpart of the city’s best casino.

Paiute Golf Resort – Snow Mountain Course

Everything else about the Snow Mountain Course at the Paiute Golf Resort is as pure a desert golf vacation destination as it can get except for one thing: water. The water hazards on the course are an ample and screaming reminder to the golfers that this is not their ordinary desert golf course. This is something so out-of-the-box, it could only be a Pete Dye creation. The caliber of this Las Vegas golfing spectacle is arguably the best one can have in Sin City; its only contender for the spot is its sibling Wolf Course, a Dye creation too, no less.

As mentioned earlier, what sets this course apart are its water features. Water plays on 7 of its 18 holes, with the last three being close to submerged. A little bit overrated a description, but the challenge that water poses on the closing holes make it seem so. The Snow Mountain Course measures 7,146 yards from the longest tees, playing for a par of 72. The greens are quick, mostly guarded by deep bunkers, with wide fairways. The holes here are an eclectic but fun mix of long and short ones, with the last three being the most heart stopping ones anyone would ever expect to come across in the desert. The railroad-tie bunkers – a signature Dye feature – add attitude and beauty to this already incredible course. There’s no reason to expect golf vacations here are going to be anything less than that.

The Snow Mountain Course plays with four sets of tees, making it enjoyable for golfers of all handicaps. The level of challenge vary from tee to tee; only one thing is constant: there is challenge here from whichever hole, whichever angle. Golf trips here bring a totally different face to desert golfing.

Paiute Golf Resort – Wolf Course

This course is “in-biting”! The word play may not work for everyone but the Wolf Course of the Paiute Golf Course would definitely be a delight to play for any golfer. It appeals most especially to golfers of discriminating taste – offers a satisfaction that only a Pete Dye creation could give. This golf course right at the heart of Las Vegas is a golf vacation that will most definitely leave its mark.

The Wolf Course is regarded the longest course in Nevada, and perhaps the entire Southeast region, at 7,604 yards from the longest tees. With its sweeping views of the surrounding desert, the flat and rocky terrain, signature Dye bunkers, things cannot get any more interesting and beautiful than this. There are numerous doglegs and forced carries to hurdle; trust that it’s a wild one that cannot easily be tamed. For the more challenged ones, there are five sets of tees to choose from. Not that it’s going to be any easier; it’s just going to be a lot more forgiving and patient. The best thing about it is perhaps the most undeniable: this is a desert golf vacation destination at its purest; golfers can play and enjoy the golds and reds of the desert landscape undisturbed by the presence of residential edifices.

The signature hole of the Wolf Course is the island green 15th. It is reminiscent of TPC of Sawgrass’ 17th, which is also a Dye masterpiece. To cap it all off, the course is in a golf resort that could not be placed anywhere below excellent and superb and world-class. As are the amenities and services – naturally. This is one absolute Las Vegas golf trip that is “to-Dye-for!”

Badlands Golf Club

No golfer cannot go any “badder” than at the Badlands Golf Club. This is among Sin City’s most challenging desert golfing experience, and it won’t go easy on anybody. As its name implies, it can be outright bad to any golfer, but a fun and unforgettable challenge to the true golf lover. But not a single golfer would actually say that it is “bad” on merits of excellence in layout and scenery. This is one golf trip that will show the good in the bad.

The Badlands Golf Club is a collaboration of Johnny Miller and Chi Chi Rodriguez. They have magically transformed the flat piece of desert land into a complete golf facility consisting of three magnificent nines. And their names would speak for themselves: the Desperado, Diablo, and the newest one, the Outlaw. Each nine measures about 3,500 yards from the longest tees. Each nine features a rugged desert terrain, with quick greens and wide fairways. The contrasting textures and hues made by the sharp cliffs and rocks and the greens are a visual statement almost devilish in nature. No goody two shoes here; one can’t go nice and easy or shots will go wayward, and the monstrous arroyos and edges will eat the ball alive. This golf vacation destination is a force to reckon with, hands down.

Each pairing of nines brings a different flavor to the game. The desert heat and the breeze, though, are but a constant companion. The games here are so great, so challenging, that golf vacations here don’t come in single occurrences; there is almost always a nagging need to come back. It’s a bad habit to break. The Badlands Golf Club is perhaps the “best” “bad” thing to come to Las Vegas golfing.

Angel Park Golf Club – Mountain Course

This is the closest to heaven any golfer could get in Sin City. Or in the entire Nevada. The Angel Park Golf Club has fondly been named “the world’s most complete Las Vegas golf experience”. And there is reason enough for it. It is a 36-hole facility, and a world class putting green and short course on the side. One of its courses alone, the Mountain Course, has more than enough a golfer could want, need, and ask for in a golf vacation.

The legendary designer Arnold Palmer brought his genius down to Las Vegas when he designed the Mountain Course. And it bears all the signature features ever to be expected of a Palmer signature. On top of Palmer’s well-placed, wild-shaped bunkers, Palmer has perfectly captured and highlighted the natural endowments of its location. The course has retained its natural terrain, thus the variety in elevation changes. It also has a perfect balance of natural desert vegetation, water hazards in all the right places, and an unlimited helping of the Las Vegas Valley and the Red Rock Canyon. At close to 3000 feet in elevation, this is indeed one very-close-to-heaven golf trip no golfer could ever resist.

No golfer at all, because most everyone who knows how to hold a club and play ball could have fun here. What, with four sets of tees on a very playable layout from each tee, this golf vacation destination is for everyone. The Mountain Course measures 6772 yards from the longest tees, par 71 (par 72 for women), and is complemented by the world class amenities and services at its Mediterranean style clubhouse. Its dining options are heavenly themselves, naturally.

Concord Course – Revere at Anthem

The Revere at Anthem, in Henderson, just a little outside of Las Vegas, is a well known golf vacation stopover. Golfers know they are in for one tough joyride in the Revere’s Concord Course. The Billy Casper/Greg Nash creation will take golfers in a roller coaster adventure through Nevada’s most scenic desert locations.

Measuring 7,034 yards from the longest tees, the Concord Course has an ideal location in one of the highest points in the valley. With majority of the natural desert terrain retained, the golf vacation destination has very dramatic elevation changes and breathtaking views. Rocky outcroppings, bunkers, wide fairways and large greens all make up the wild ride of a game. The level of challenge rises and falls just as much as there are changes in elevation. And the most fascinating of it all is a most appropriate ending: the 18th hole – a long, downhill par 5 aptly called “Independence”. The greens are guarded by a ravine at the front, demands all the precision and accuracy for the golfer. Tricky at best, traitor at worst. This is considered not only the best closing hole in Las Vegas, but the best golfing hole in the area. A most fitting ending to a tough joyride.

The scenery surrounding the Concord Course is among the best anyone could ask for when sightseeing. Good scenery, even better layout – no wonder this course holds a four and a half star rating from Golf Digest’s Places to Play and a “Best New Course in Las Vegas” award (2002). The course is difficult but forgiving; it could be hard to play at times – but it is harder not to! It would be even more difficult to forgive having to miss a golf trip here!

Lexington Course – The Revere at Anthem

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. But a true golfing aficionado does not stop and stay in Vegas for his ultimate golf vacation. He goes just a little outside the Sin City, in Henderson, and knows that he is where he should be. The Revere at Anthem is a 36-hole spectacle that has all the good things any golfer would want in a Nevada-flavored trip. And the Lexington Course will epitomize that.

The original of the two courses, the Lexington Course measures a good 7,143 yards, and plays for a par of 72. It was designed by Billy Casper and Greg Nash. And this was one collaboration that truly proves that ‘two heads are better than one’. They have magically combined what beauty there is in the desert’s natural surroundings and tweak it to become a beautiful golf vacation destination. The result is a hilly, steep desert course that is beautifully surrounded by desert mountains. Water comes to play on some holes, but it is the desert terrain that makes it very challenging – from either of its three tees. A novice will have as much challenge as the pro, no doubt.

But for the heartaches it causes, it makes up for in scenery. Golfers would forget about how difficult the game actually is at the Lexington Course especially when they get to the 14th hole onwards. This is where they get sweeping, unparalleled views of the Las Vegas Strip. Views, layout, amenities – there really is a reason for every golfer to not stay in Vegas – the real deal golf trip is at the Revere!
