This course is a perfect example of the cliché “more than meets the eye”. Why, at a little over 6,500 yards, the Ocean South Course on the Pelican Hill Golf Club feels and plays longer than it is. And larger at that too! It is quite a mystery how Tom Fazio has created something that has so much for something average in size. Golfers must expect, too, for their golf trips hereabouts to be more than what they would or could ever expect.

The Ocean South Course has recently undergone a massive revamping, and it is now twice as perfect as when Tom Fazio first created it to be. Fazio’s remodeling of his own work created a spectacle that has features that will most likely take golfers on a rollercoaster ride of textures and difficulties. The course moves from greens to trees to magnificent floral gardens of various hues to the beach. And all the way and through it, there is an unending and unmatched view of the ocean nearby – a breathtaking backdrop to a rather challenging feat of surviving the 18-holes of this course in a neat scorecard. All that standing side by side in this medium sized golf course. For a golf course to end up as exquisite as this golf vacation destination is a massive feat that would take a genius to achieve. Tom Fazio is, hands down.

Fazio’s genius and the course’s naturally beautiful setting could only be complemented by amenities in no lesser way. Just as perfect, the services and facilities including pro shop and excellent 19th hole in the form of the Pelican Grill complete the golf vacation package. Ocean South Course is no cliché; it’s just plain perfect.

Hidden Creek Golf Club

If this golf vacation destination were truly ‘hidden’, it is worth seeking for. The Hidden Creek Golf Club in Navarre, Florida, could easily have been missed out being flanked by two golfing spots – Fort Walton Beach and Pensacola. But thanks to its layout and amenities, it easily stands at par with the bigger, more popular courses in the area.

The Hidden Creek Golf Club is a Ron Garl creation featuring a highly playable layout with just the right amount of ‘kick’ in every hole to keep things interesting. It opened in 1988 and its resume includes an impressive list of US Open Qualifying Rounds and a 4 ½ star rating from Golf Digest. It is also in the elite list of Golf Digest’s Top 201 Places to Play in North America. With 6,805 yards from the longest tees, the course plays for a par of 72 with four sets of tees on a fairly open layout. It is slightly elevated, with a lot of room for tees, and the greens are fast and true. Pines dot the well manicured greens adding a scenic and challenging touch up to the relatively flat terrain. To complete the golf vacation package, the course offers some of the best amenities anyone can find in the area.

It boasts of a newly built clubhouse complete with two full locker rooms, a shower and a sauna. The fine dining restaurant, The Tuscan Grille, completes any guest’s golf trip experience at the Hidden Creek Golf Club with its excellent choice for lunch and dinner. The green fees are reasonable, the amenities superb, and the layout is interesting from the 1st hole down to the last. No golfer could ever hide his fascination for this course; the reasons are quite easy to find.

A renovation does not necessarily mean the old one is ugly. It sometimes means the old one was good but there is always room to make things better. And such was the case of the 1960s Mark Mahannah creation in Royal Palm Beach, Florida – the Village Golf Club. Golfers would not have imagined there could be a better version of the golf vacation destination, but there is.

The 6,900-yard, par-72 championship golfing facility was expanded on all sides, the greens upgraded, and the amenities overhauled. Golfers are treated on 175 acres of the most verdant of Southern Florida terrain, with holes that wind through many challenging sand traps, mature cypresses, and a lot of water hazard. And by a LOT, the Village Golf Club DOES mean A LOT. Water plays a major role in the course and golfers need to be extremely careful and smart in dealing with the water holes. Thankfully though, most of the landing areas of the course are generous to compensate for the difficulty. To make matters even better, the other facilities in the course have also seen total renovations, thereby completing the golf vacation package.

The clubhouse of the Village Golf Club now measures a whooping 15,000 square feet with the 19th hole a ready oasis for golfers to replenish in after the long game. Golfers would also love the expanded practice putting greens and the practice chipping greens. The whole renovation cost some huge figures for the developer, but warranted better – maybe even the BEST – golf trips hereabouts for countless golfers. And that makes it all worth it.

This 18-hole, 7,019-yard course is only one of three courses in the Southern Pines, Pinehurst and Aberdeen area that has hosted a USGA national golf championship.
